Detroit Titans guard Chase Simon picked up a second award of note in as many days as he was named National Jesuit Player of the Week by the Jesuit Basketball Spotlight on Tuesday.
The sophomore guard led the Titans to a perfect 2-0 mark last week, including a JBS win over Loyola Chicago. He scored 30 points and added five rebounds, three assists and two steals against the Ramblers, and then followed that up with his second career double-double of 20 points and 10 rebounds vs. UIC.
He has now led UDM in scoring in six straight games, including five with 20+ points. In his first season as a Titan after transferring from Central Michigan, Simon has made a difference as the team has won as many games already this year (14) as it had won in the previous two years combined. He earned Horizon League Player of the Week honors on Monday.
The Jesuit Basketball Spotlight project is a nationwide effort to identify basketball games between Jesuit schools during the 2009-10 season and, through those games, bring greater positive awareness to Jesuit education and mission. This project was developed by the Association of Jesuit Colleges and Universities (AJCU) in response to member institutions wanting to spread the word of Jesuit higher education through the more than 90 basketball games in which Jesuit institutions play each other (men and women) this season.
Simon and the Titans – who are tied with Wright State for second place in the Horizon League standings – are back in action Thursday night at 15th-ranked and first-place Butler. The 7:00 p.m. game will be televised live on FOX Sports Detroit.
