Ivory was an All-Catholic and All-American guard in 1946 when he was a captain for the U-D team. He was selected for the 1945 Collegiate All-Star game in Chicago against the NFL champions and played on the Championship Team of the Air Force League in 1945. He played for the Detroit Lions in 1947 and came back to be the line coach from 1948-50 for the U-D football team.
