Payne led the Titans in scoring during the 1936 season with nine touchdowns for 54 points. He scored three touchdowns in his first start ever at U-D in the 1936 home opener. He was a versatile athlete who played many positions at U-D, including halfback, end, and punter. He won the Loyalty Award in 1935 as a junior. His team went 17-9-1 in his three years as a Titan.
