Surowiec was the captain of the 1959 U-D squad which finished 13th in the nation in team competition and he was seventh individually the same year and missed making All-American in saber by one win after compiling a 17-7 record in the national tournament. He was a three-year letterman and was the Titans’ freshman coach from 1962-64 and started U-D Hall of Famer Dan Cantillon in the sport.
