Alderman earned three letters for the Titan football team from 1957-1959 as an offensive lineman. He was drafted by the Detroit Lions in 1960 in the 10th round (111th overall) of the 1960 draft. He was picked up and became an original Minnesota Viking in the expansion draft of 1961. He played 15 years in the NFL, 14 of those with the Vikings protecting Hall of Fame quarterback Fran Tarkenton. Alderman served as the general manager of the NFL's Denver Broncos in 1981 for one season. The six-time pro bowler was named to the NFL All-Pro first team in 1969 and the second team in 1965 as voted by the Associated Press.
