Ryan was a key member of U-D’s strong mile and medley relay squads as the anchor, but his real specialty was the quarter-mile. He was a member of the famous “Seven Iron Men”, and won the 600 yard dash in the Canadian National Indoor Championships and also polished off the mile relay victory in the same event. Another example of his talent came in the Chicago Relays when he won the 440 yard dash, outrunning competitors from all over the Midwest. He ran the anchor leg of the mile relay in the National AAU Championship meet in which his team placed second.
