Massey was a four-year regular as a fullback known for his outstanding blocking ability as well as his talent for carrying the football. He was part of the U-D backfield that finished in the Top-10 nationally in rushing three straight seasons. The 1949 Titan captain, Massey led the team in rushing that year with 499 yards on 80 carries, good enough to place him fourth in the Missouri Valley Conference. The Titans won the MVC championship that fall and put together career rushing totals of 236 attempts, 1,351 yards, a 5.7 average per carry and 98 total points.
