Koval was a bruising linebacker on defense and a punishing blocker on offense. A preseason All-American in Street and Smith’s 1963 Football Yearbook, he was listed as one of the 10 best college linemen in the nation in 1963. He was chosen as U-D’s most valuable player for the 1963 season and also garnered Lineman-of-the-Year honors his junior and senior years. He was named All-Catholic and All-American in 1963 before signing a professional contract with the Buffalo Bills. He was a co-captain his senior year and he made numerous All-Opponent teams because of the aggressive style in which he played.
