A four-year starter and a 1978 college All-American, Tyler helped lead the Titans to 86 victories in four years, an NCAA Tournament berth in 1977 and the NIT in 1978. He was known for his leaping ability and defensive prowess and became just the fifth player in Detroit history to score more than 1,600 career points. He finished his career with 1,649 points in 110 games, a 15.0 average, along with 1,151 rebounds. Tyler set the school record for blocked shots in a game (13), season (172 in 1978) and career (359). He was drafted by the Detroit Pistons in the second round of the 1978 NBA draft (23rd overall) and played in 871 career games with Detroit, Sacramento, and Dallas.
