Gruber won 46 of 56 races at U-D running the 220 and 440 yard dashes. He was named Athlete of the Year in 1949 and 1950 and holds the U-D outdoor records for the 100, 220, and 440 yard dashes. He led the track team in points during the 1949 campaign and was also an outstanding football player at U-D holding the Titan record for longest run from scrimmage which was a 97 yard dash.
