2010 NCAA Midwest Fencing Regional Results
Facing a tough field at the 2010 NCAA Midwest Regional at Northwestern University on Saturday, UDM senior
Ashlee McLemore (Detroit, MI/Renaissance) fenced her way to 12th place in the women's sabre competition, while senior
Ashley Colbert (Washington, MI/Romeo) and sophomore
Brittany Cook (Burton, MI/Owosso) competed in the foil.
“Everyone actually fenced real well for us,” said Detroit head coach
Todd Dressell. “The fields were very tough but we competed hard.”
Colbert and Cook finished 15th and 16th, respectively, narrowly missing out on advancing out of the play-in pool Saturday morning. Both notched 2-3 marks in the pool.
McLemore was seeded No. 12 following a 1-5 record in her pool, recording her lone victory by shutout over Wayne State's Katie Bryce. The senior finished with a record of 2-8 on the day, notching her only other victory by a tally of 15-4 over Anna Kotov, also from Wayne State.
Competing in the hopes of earning a bid to the NCAA Championships, McLemore will now have to wait for a decision from the selection committee on Tuesday.
“She will be an at-large candidate, and that's really about as good as we could have hoped for,” Dressell said. “She was dealing with some knee pain and, considering that, she showed a lot of courage and fenced tough. We just have to remain hopeful because once the decision goes to committee, anything can happen.”
The field for the 2010 NCAA Championships will be selected Tuesday, and the competition will be held on March 25-28 in Cambridge, MA.
