Junior
Melanie Capuano (Grosse Pointe Farms, MI/Grosse Pointe South) and freshman
Julia Fernandes (Mississauga, ON/John Fraser) each claimed fifth place in their respective flight as the UDM women's tennis team's fall season opener came to an end on Sunday.
Capuano ousted IUPUI's Jesika Bays, 7-6 (1), 6-0, in Flight 7, while Fernandes took care of Cincinnati's Carly Wilson in straight sets, 6-4, 6-1.
Also picking up singles wins were junior
Amanda Cornwell (Waterford, MI/Kettering) and freshman
Elena Strakhova (Penza, Russia/#216 “Didakt”). Cornwell beat Shelby Hullett (IUPUI), 6-0, 6-2, to take seventh place in Flight 2. Strakhova also earned seventh as she eliminated another Jaguar in Lee Matthews, 6-4, 6-4, in Flight 4.
In doubles, sophomore
Carolina Salas Espinosa (Monterrey, Mexico/Preparatoria No. 7) and freshman
Raina Halabi (Beamsville, ON/Niagara Academy of Tennis) captured seventh place with a win over Youngstown State's Margarita Sadovnikova and Karolina Sjokvist in the top flight. At No. 3, Cornwell and Strakhova recorded an 8-3 win over another IUPUI tandem in Vanessa Whyte and Matthews.
The Titans will continue their fall slate next weekend as UDM travels to East Lansing for the Spartan Invitational.
