Titans Host Wright State in Conference Opener

Final Match Results

SOUTHFIELD, Mich. -- Detroit began Horizon League play with a match against Wright State Friday evening falling in a close 4-3 decision at the Franklin Athletic Club.

The Titan No. 3 doubles pairing of freshman Julia Fernandes (Mississauga, ON/John Fraser) and senior Erin Weldon (Kalamazoo, MI/Mattawan) won 8-4 to start the night off for Detroit but Wright State would take the other match-ups in doubles to capture the point.

In singles, Fernandes and Weldon each exited the evening with a pair of wins as each won their singles match-ups in straight sets. Fernandes played at No. 5 taking a 6-3, 6-2 decision and Weldon at No. 6, 6-3, 6-1.

Freshman Elena Strakhova (Penza, Russia/#216 "Didakt") was the third Titan to win singles as she posted a come-from-behind victory after falling 6-3 in the opening set. Strakhova stormed back to win 6-2, 6-4 in the second and third sets to bring the Titans within a point of the team win.

Junior Amanda Cornwell (Waterford, MI/Kettering) and freshman Raina Halabi (Beamsville, ON/Niagara Academy of Tennis) each pushed their head-to-head contests to a third and deciding set and Halabi came up two points shy in a long, drawn-out battle to sophomore Amy Nini falling 7-6 (11-9), 5-7, 6-4 but the Titans came up just short against the Raiders.

The Titans now have a 0-12 dual season mark and are 0-1 in the Horizon League.

Detroit will continue Horizon League action Saturday at the Franklin Racquet Club again hosting a pair of doubleheaders, this time welcoming Butler. The men will play first at 6:00 p.m, followed by the women at 7:30 p.m.
