Titans Set to Host Detroit Mercy Fencing Invitational on Sunday

DETROIT (1/9/2019) -- The University of Detroit Mercy fencing program is hosting its annual Detroit Mercy Fencing Invitational on Sunday, Jan. 13 at Calihan Hall. The Titans will be welcoming five fencing programs for a full day of competition, starting at 9 a.m. Admission into the event is free.

Cleveland State, Michigan, Michigan State, Oakland and Wayne State are all set to visit Calihan Hall for the invitational. Each team will compete against one another throughout the day in different rounds.

Detroit Mercy is entering its 20th season under fencing head coach Todd Dressell.

The Titans men's fencing program returns senior foilists Algird Szumlas and Josh Blackburn, as well as senior Joshua Sexton and junior Wiley Dressell in sabre, among others. Szumlas (team-best 44 bout victories), Blackburn (23 wins), Dressell (33 triumphs) and Sexton (23 wins) combined for 123 bout victories last season, with Dressell earning Second Team All-Conference honors. Szumlas is a three-time All-Conference honoree who qualified for the NCAA Championships in 2017 as a sophomore.

Back in December, four men's fencers medaled at Wayne State's Istvan Danosi Open. Dressell earned his first Danosi Open crown by edging his brother, freshman Wyatt Dressell, in the title match. Blackburn earned a silver medal after advancing to the foil title bout and Szumlas took home the bronze, his fourth medal at the Danosi in as many seasons.

On the women's side, senior Erica Tessmer and junior Savannah Lee will once again be competing in sabre. The two combined for 37 victories last season in the weapon. Tessmer has earned the team's MVP honor in each of her three seasons.

The women's team opened the season with a pair of medalists at the Danosi Open. Lee and freshman foilist Manal Shaito both earned bronze medals for Detroit Mercy in their respective weapons.

In last year's Detroit Mercy Fencing Invitational, the men's program went 3-1, behind an 8-0 mark by Szumlas and 9-2 record by Blackburn. The women's program finished 1-3 on the day as Lee led the way with seven victories at sabre.

Results will be posted at www.DetroitTitans.com following the conclusion of the invitational.
