Titans Fall to Lobos in Season Opener

Post-game comments from Coach McCallum

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.-- The Detroit Titans men's basketball team opened its 2010-11 schedule with a 63-54 loss at New Mexico Saturday night at University Arena.  The Titans stayed in the game despite an off shooting night as they held the home team to 39.6 percent shooting from the floor.

Eli Holman led the Titan attack with game highs in points (15) and rebounds (13) in the loss.  Nick Minnerath added 11 points with three triples.

Both teams struggled to find a rhythm offensively in the first half and New Mexico took advantage of 13 Detroit first-half turnovers to take a 32-21 advantage into the locker room.  Foul trouble also plagued the Titans in the opening stanza as Ray McCallum picked-up three quick whistles and LaMarcus Lowe and Minnerath each had two fouls in the first 20 minutes.

Minnerath opened the second-half scoring with another triple, closing the gap to eight.  The Titans would get no closer, however, with the Lobos building a lead that would grow to as many as 21 midway through the half.

Seven straight UDM points put the Titans right back into the game and Detroit would whittle it all the way down to nine by the final buzzer but would run out of time on the comeback attempt giving UNM a win in its inaugural game at the newly-refurbished "Pit".

Perimeter shooting-- which had been a strength in the two exhibition wins for Detroit-- was off-the-mark Saturday, for both teams.  Detroit's 4-for-22 performance from the three-point line prevented the Titans from rallying but UNM struggled from deep as well, connecting on just 3-of-20 shots from three-point range.

UDM (0-1) will head to 13th-ranked Syracuse for a showdown with the Orange at the Carrier Dome Tuesday.  The game is slated for a 7:00 p.m. start and will be shown on ESPN3.com (check local listings for coverage in your area).
