Detroit Mercy Celebrates Title IX

DETROIT (9/1/2022) -- The history of women's athletics started at the University in 1977 as Athletic Director Dick Vitale announced the addition of the first two female varsity sports in basketball and softball. Since then, the Titans have expanded their female sports programs with cross country, track and field and fencing in the 1980's, soccer and tennis in the 1990's and golf and lacrosse in the 2000's. Those programs have produced a number of All-Academic honorees, All-Americans, conference champions, NCAA participants, a postseason title and a win in the NCAA Tournament.

In the month of September, we would like to proudly recognize and praise all of our female student-athletes as the NCAA celebrates the 50th Anniversary of Title IX this year. Each day, the Titans will honor one of their great female student-athletes on social media and throughout the month, their will be select feature stories on current student-athletes and alumni.
