Detroit Suffers First Home Setback

Box score

DETROIT--  Detroit suffered its first loss at home with a 77-69 setback against Akron Wednesday night at Calihan Hall in non-conference action.  The loss snapped a string of nine straight home wins over non-conference opponents and was the first loss to a Mid-American Conference school in seven tries dating back two seasons ago.

Chase Simon led Detroit (4-4) with a season-high 24 points, 20 of those coming in the second half.  Eli Holman narrowly missed out on another double-double, scoring nine points with a game-high 13 rebounds.  Ray McCallum added 10 assists, eight points and six boards for the Titans.

The Titans turned the ball over 20 times in the loss and Akron (3-2) took advantage with 23 points off those miscues.  The Zips had four players score in double figures led by 18 from Nikola Cvetinovic.

Akron took the early lead and remained on top for a good portion of the opening stanza until Simon's two-handed jam pulled it even at 21-apiece.  Donavan Foster later hit a triple from the corner for the Titans' first lead and UDM held a slim 37-36 advantage at the halftime.  At the break, McCallum already had eight points, seven assists and five rebounds.

In the second frame, Akron's lead would balloon to 11 before Simon buried a trey in front of his team's bench as the Titans fought to chip away at the Zips' lead.  Simon was the go-to guy in the second half, hitting 7-of-9 in the final 20 minutes, including all three of his triple tries.

Despite being in foul trouble and losing two players with five personals, Akron had eight players log at least 10 minutes and had nine find the scoresheet in a balanced attack.

Detroit embarks on the Horizon League schedule, hosting Wright State Saturday in the final game of a five-game homestand.  The game will be televised live on FOX Sports Detroit.  "Detroit Titan Court Report" airs pre-game at 11:30 a.m. with tip slated for noon.
