CHICAGO-- Junior
Nick Minnerath notched his second straight 20-point night in leading the Detroit Titans to an 83-71 road win at Loyola at the Joseph J. Gentile Center in Horizon League play Thursday night. Minnerath had a dozen first-half points and made all three of his triple tries in the game to give Detroit the win in its first league road contest.
Minnerath's effort comes on the heels of his career-high 21-point game last Saturday in the overtime loss vs. Milwaukee. On this night, the junior transfer led a group of four Titans in double figures as
Ray McCallum added 16,
Chris Blake 15 and
Eli Holman with 10 for the road team. Holman etched his eighth double-double of the season as he chipped-in a game-high 14 rebounds, helping Detroit own the boards, 40-29.
Minnerath came out hot, scoring nine of the first 11 Titan points, but Loyola (10-6, 1-4 HL) held a 15-11 advantage early on. Detroit (9-7, 3-1) then went on a 12-0 run to regain control. The Titans would go into halftime with a 38-33 lead.
A 13-3 spurt early in the second half put the Titans on top for good. Threes from Minnerath, McCallum and
Jason Calliste came in the run and UDM recorded a season-high nine triples as a team in the victory.
The advantage would hover around 10 for most of the second stanza and the Ramblers got as close as eight with 2:53 remaining. Minnerath's two-handed putback followed by Holman's flush on the next trip all but iced it.
The UDM bench outscored Loyola's reserves 20-3, thanks to Blake's 15-point game, marking a career-high for the transfer. The Titans also used 12 offensive rebounds to gain a 24-9 advantage in second-chance points.
Geoff McCammon scored 18 points to lead the way for the Ramblers.
The Titans will remain in the Windy City and will face UIC on Saturday afternoon. The game is the first of this season's "Horizon League Game of the Week" offerings via local broadcast outlets in league media markets. Saturday's game can be seen in the Detroit area on WADL, channel 38. Check local listings for availability.
