Nick Minnerath's hot start and
Chase Simon's strong finish propelled Detroit over Lake Erie College, 95-57 at Calihan Hall Friday night in the regular season opener for both teams. Simon led all scorers with 24 points while Minnerath added 23 for the Titans.
Lake Erie (0-1) held Detroit (1-0) scoreless for nearly four minutes to start the game, but Detroit took an 11-10 lead and later scored 18 straight points, closing the half on a 37-8 run. Minnerath was the spark plug to the scoring binge, hitting a three to open the scoring.
He would have 19 points at the break, making 7-of-9 from the floor in the first stanza. UDM held a comfortable 48-20 advantage at halftime, holding the visitors to just 21.4% shooting in the opening 20 minutes.
Simon, who had just two points in the first half after picking up two quick fouls, amassed 22 points in the second half alone. The senior made 8-of-12 second-half shots, scoring his game-high 24 points in just 28 minutes of work. He added four assists, three rebounds and a pair of steals to his stat line.
Minnerath led all players with eight rebounds while three other Titans notched double-digits point totals.
Ray McCallum had 15 to go along with seven assists and
Jason Calliste and
Doug Anderson each tallied 10 points for Detroit.
Rich Austin was the leading Storm player, scoring 21 points and grabbing five rebounds.
Detroit will head to South Bend, Ind. Monday to battle Notre Dame. The game is set for a 9:00 p.m. start on ESPNU.
Notes: Detroit's win was its first in a season opener since the 2007-08 season (61-60 vs. Kent State) and first under Coach McCallum ... Monday's battle at Notre Dame is part of the Progressive CBE Classic ... The Subregional round of the tourney continues Mon. Nov. 21 through the 23rd at Bowling Green with games against the host Falcons, George Washington and Austin Peay ...
