Women’s Lacrosse to Join Atlantic Sun Conference in 2013

Atlantic Sun Release

DETROIT -- The Detroit Titan women's lacrosse program will join the Atlantic Sun Conference in the spring of 2013, as announced by the Atlantic Sun Commissioner, Ted Gumbart.  Other members will include Jacksonville, Kennesaw State, Mercer, Stetson, Longwood, and Howard.

“I am thrilled to hear that several Division I schools in the Atlantic Sun will be adding women's lacrosse and that Detroit will get the opportunity to join such a reputable conference,” said Head Coach Laura Maness.

The A-Sun will begin to apply for an NCAA automatic bid to postseason play in 2013.  The conference meets the minimum participation requirements (six teams) and hopes that a high level of competition will lead to the bid.

“We look forward to playing a highly competitive conference schedule,” Maness added. “The addition of another conference and several new teams speaks volumes to the growth of women's lacrosse at the collegiate level.”

The Titans are familiar with Jacksonville, Longwood, and Howard as each of these programs currently participate in the National Lacrosse Conference (NLC).  Kennesaw State, Mercer, and Stetson are current members of the Atlantic Sun Conference.

“Expanding the competitive opportunities for our student-athletes is also a pleasure to announce,” said A-Sun Commissioner Ted Gumbart. “The addition of women's lacrosse to the A-Sun will provide championship opportunities for the growing list of A-Sun schools that will be competing in this popular sport, and we are very excited about adding Detroit, Howard and Longwood as affiliate members. They will be excellent competitors in the A-Sun and we look forward to a very successful future in women's lacrosse.”
