Highlights from HLN
DETROIT-- DuShawn Brooks hit a game-high 24 points, including a pair of clutch three-pointers in the final minutes, to give visiting Youngstown State (5-1, 1-0 HL) a 64-61 win over Detroit in the Horizon League opener for both teams Thursday night at Calihan Hall.
Detroit sophomore
Ray McCallum and senior
Chase Simon each had 21 to pace the Titans. McCallum added 10 rebounds for his first double-double of the season.
The loss snapped the Titans' five-game winning streak over the Penguins.
YSU didn't look the part of a team that registered two wins in league play last year. The second-leading shot blocker in the country, Damian Eargle, had one early and the Horizon League's leading scorer, Kendrick Perry, finished an alley oop as YSU established a 4-0 lead.
Doug Anderson flew in down the paint and flushed home an offensive rebound to get Detroit on the board and the fans out of their seats. McCallum was the spark plug for the Titans in the first half, generating 17 points and seven rebounds in the first 20 minutes.
The Penguins held a slim one-point advantage at the break and it was a battle throughout with the lead changing hands eight times and neither team holding more than an eight-point cushion.
With 3:30 to play, Detroit had a 56-53 advantage when Brooks began to catch fire. He hit a jumper to cut it to one, then
Donavan Foster buried a big three in front of his bench to make it a four-point game.
Brooks answered with triples on the next two possessions and the Penguins grabbed a huge road win. The Titans held Perry to 13 points with just 1-of-5 from deep, but the Penguins hit nine three-pointers on the game.
LaMarcus Lowe blocked three shots to extend his personal streak of at least two blocks in every game this season. He added nine rebounds and four points for the home team.
Detroit continues its four-game homestand Saturday afternoon with a matinee against Cleveland State. Tip time is set for 2:00 p.m. at Calihan Hall.
