CHICAGO, Ill.--  Host UIC survived for a 63-59 win over the Detroit Titans in men's basketball action at the UIC Pavilion Thursday night as Horizon League play resumed.  With the Titans trailing by two with 2.8 seconds left, Jason Calliste drew a foul but missed the front end of a one-and-one free throw opportunity and UIC held on.

Senior Chase Simon was called for an offensive foul and UIC (5-8, 1-2 HL) held a four-point lead with the ball and under a minute to play.  Full-court Titan pressure caused a turnover and Doug Anderson got free for a dunk to close within a bucket.  After Eli Holman stole the ball on the other end with 15 seconds left, Detroit (6-9, 0-3 HL) was able to get a chance at a final shot-- trailing by two-- to send the game to overtime or potentially grab the win.

With the score 61-59 in favor of UIC and 11.8 seconds left, Coach Ray McCallum called a timeout to draw up a play and then a subsequent timeout came from Howard Moore to set his defense for the finish.  Calliste, a .763 free-thrower heading into the game, drew a foul with 2.8 seconds remaining and headed to the line with a one-plus-the-bonus opportunity, but it missed left.  UIC grabbed the board and Daniel Barnes converted on both free throws to ice the win.

UIC took a 16-5 lead to start the game, but nine straight points by the Titans got it back within a bucket.  The stretch included  nearly five minutes without a UIC score.  The final basket of the run was from Calliste, who passed up a triple and drove to the rim for a conventional three-point play.

Eli Holman's bucket underneath re-tied the score at 18-apiece. A possession later, Doug Anderson flushed down a two-handed jam forcing a Flame timeout to attempt to quell the momentum which clearly rested with Detroit.

UIC took a slim 30-28 lead into halftime, thanks to a 6-for-14 effort from deep, taking advantage of a brief zone look from Detroit defensively.

The Titans eventually regained the lead on a jumper by Simon, but it was short-lived as five straight points from UIC leading scorer Gary Talton gave the Flames the advantage for good.

Detroit was led by Simon's 14 points while Holman added 12 points, five rebounds, two blocks and two steals.  Sophomore Ray McCallum had nine points and six boards.

UIC got a game-high 21 from Talton to go along with five assists for the Flames.  Barnes chipped-in 14 with 10 more from Hayden Humes.

The Titans remain in the Windy City and will take on Loyola Saturday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. Eastern on the Horizon League Network.
