NEWARK, Del. -- Freshman
Shayne Adams (St. Catharines, ON/Denis Morris), netted the first Titan goal of 2011 and finished with a hat trick, but Detroit could not keep up with No. 17 Delaware falling to the Blue Hens, 13-5, on Saturday afternoon at Delaware Stadium.
The contest was the first Division I game of the 2011 season.
“Our guys played hard against a very good team and they will improve from this type of competition,” said head coach
Matt Holtz. “We weren't able to convert on some early scoring opportunities and they took advantage."
All five Titan goals were scored with the man-up, a school record with the extra-man advantage, as Detroit took advantage of six Delaware penalties. Junior
Scott Harris (Saline, MI/Saline) finished with a goal and two assists, while senior
Matt Gregson (Flint, MI/Powers Catholic) had the other Titan goal.
Defensively, sophomore
Jordan Houtby (St. Catharines, ON/Holy Cross Secondary) caused a game-high six turnovers and picked up a career and game-best nine ground balls.
“Jordan had a very strong game today causing a lot of turnovers,” added Holtz.
The Blue Hens scored the first two goals of the game before Harris found Adams, who powered one past the goalie to cut the deficit in half. Delaware then went on to score five straight before Harris ended the second period with a marker.
The Titans were down 12-2 in the fourth when Adams picked up his second goal off the contest. He would knock in his third marker with less than a minute to go as freshman
Alex Maini (Lynbrook, NY/Lynbrook), fed him a pass for the quick strike. With 10 seconds left, Harris notched his second helper of the game setting up Gregson's tally.
Sophomore goalie #A.J. Levell# (Columbus, OH/Dublin Scioto) ended the game with a career-high 17 saves.
Detroit will have a busy week ahead as it travels to Ohio State on Thursday and Bellarmine on Saturday.
Game Notes:
For the third year in a row, a freshman scored the Titans' first goal of the season as Harris did it at Ohio State in 2009,
Joel Matthews against Bellarmine last year and Adams today…The three man-up goals scored by Adams was a school record…Houtby was just one GB away from tying a school record, held by goalie
Vince Diana at Denver on April 17, 2009…The game was the second versus a ranked team in Detroit history as UDM fell at No. 4 North Carolina, 19-4, in 2009…Houtby tied his career and his school record with the six caused turnovers…The 53 shots by Delaware was the most by an opponent since Air Force put up 54 in the season finale in 2009.
