Senior Night Brings Second Straight Win for Titans

FINAL MATCH RESULTS

SOUTHFIELD, Mich. -- The Titans honored senior Erin Weldon (Kalamazoo, MI/Mattawan) and improved to 3-3 in the Horizon League winning their second straight conference match with a 5-2 win over Milwaukee Saturday evening.

Detroit took two out of three match-ups in doubles capturing the point for the fourth time this year. The Titans (3-16, 3-3 Horizon League) have now won three of their last six match-ups and now have a hold on the sixth position in the conference ahead of Milwaukee (11-9, 3-5 Horizon League), Green Bay, and Valparaiso.

Sophomore Carolina Salas Espinosa (Monterrey, Mexico/Preparatoria No. 7) and junior Amanda Cornwell (Waterford, MI/Kettering) paired up at No. 1 doubles and breezed through their match with an 8-0 win. It was the fourth win for the duo in their last five outings.

After Detroit's No. 3 combination fell, it was all eyes on the center court as freshmen Raina Halabi (Beamsville, ON/Niagara Academy of Tennis) and Elena Strakhova (Penza, Russia/#216 "Didakt") finished with an 8-4 win for the pairing's team-high seventh win.

In singles, Espinosa continued to play well as she settled into the No. 2 position comfortably downing her opponent in straight sets. Strakhova, freshman Julia Fernandes (Mississauga, ON/John Fraser), and Weldon also captured singles wins for Detroit.

"Today we played as a team and not as individuals. Our energy and synergy as a team allowed us to play a good match," said interim head coach Pjotrs Necajevs.

"Our senior clinched the fourth point for us tonight. It was a perfect scenario for her in her final home match."

Weldon spent four years wearing the red, white, and blue. She has 64 doubles wins in her doubles career placing her one behind the top career spot in Detroit Titan history held by Annie Moore. In singles, with the win tonight against Milwaukee, Weldon now has 68 in her career placing her in a tie for third best all-time with Svetlana Flankova and nine back of the top spot occupied by Maria Pandele.

The Titans will close out the regular season with a pair of doubleheaders with the men's team. Detroit will head to Cleveland State this Saturday and Youngstown State on Sunday to finish up this year's campaign.
