DETROIT – The women's lacrosse team will prepare for the upcoming 2012 season with five scrimmages in the fall. The Titans will travel to Pittsburgh to participate in Lacrosse for Hope on Oct. 2, and they will end the fall schedule with a pair of exhibition contests at Cincinnati on Oct. 8.
Robert Morris will host Lacrosse for Hope, a fundraising event that focuses on Huntington's disease. This year all fundraising will benefit the Western Pennsylvania Chapter of the Huntington's Disease Society of America.
Robert Morris, Pittsburgh, Duquesne, Grand Valley, and Canisius will join Detroit at the event. Robert Morris will face Pittsburgh at 9:00 a.m. to start the day and a matchup between Duquesne and Grand Valley will follow at 10:00 a.m.
Detroit's first scrimmage will be against Canisius at 11:00 a.m. The Titans will also face Duquesne at 2:00 p.m. and end the day with an exhibition against Pittsburgh at 4:00 p.m. Each scrimmage will last approximately one hour.
“Participating in Lacrosse for Hope will give us a good measuring point of where we are at,” Head Coach
Laura Maness explained. “It will help us understand what we need to focus on for the upcoming season.”
Officials from Michigan, Ohio, and the Pennsylvania will be at the event to help the teams adapt to the new major rule changes that have been approved by the NCAA Women's Lacrosse Rules Committee for the 2012 season. Even though officials will be present, no stats or scores will be available during the scrimmages.
“Our fall schedule will give us a chance to adapt to the new rule changes,” Maness added. “It gives us an opportunity to move players into different positions to see what works best for us. It also gives our freshmen the chance to gain some game experience which is important.”
The Titans will also travel to Cincinnati scrimmage the Louisville Cardinals along with the Bearcats at Nippert Stadium. The first exhibition will be against Louisville at 1:00 p.m., and the final scrimmage of that day will be played against Cincinnati at 2:00 p.m.
