Lepera Guides Titans to Victory Over Western Michigan

Box Score

DETROIT -- Pat Lepera scored two goals and also recorded an assist in the first half against Western Michigan leading the Titans to a 3-2 victory over the Broncos.

Detroit opened up a 3-0 lead at the half, but Western Michigan never let up as they came within one goal with just under 10 minutes remaining. The Titan defense held strong as Detroit recorded their first home win of the season.

Lepera scored his first goal of the season early in the first half by streaking down the right side of the field. After getting by the Bronco defense Lepera fired a shot from 10 yards out finding the right side of the net. Lepera increased the lead to 2-0 with a header goal off a corner kick from Jon Bowman.

Detroit's third goal of the game was scored by sophomore Patrick Soltys. Lepera found Soltys in the middle of the field and he was able to beat the keeper giving UDM a 3-0 lead after the first 45 minutes of action.

Western Michigan controlled the momentum in the second half as they surged from behind. The Broncos cut into the lead after a goal from Aaron Hebden, and the game got very interesting after Shane Lyons cut the goal deficit to one.

It was the first goal of the year for Hebden as he was assisted on the play by Oliver Mayer. Lyons came up with his sixth goal of the year off an assist from Derek Schrauben.

Head Coach Nicholas Deren decided for the team to wear their red jerseys on Wednesday against the Broncos. Detroit usually wears red on the road but with a perfect road record, and no wins at home, Deren decided to make the change.

Anthony Shepherd got the win as the Detroit goalkeeper. Shepherd made four saves against Western Michigan and was helped out by the Titan backline as a team save was also recorded.

Western Michigan used two goalkeepers as Matt Murrell got the start in the first half, while Sean Lewis finished the game. Each keeper recorded one save.

The Titans will return to Horizon League action with a road game against Valparaiso on Friday night. Detroit will face the Crusaders at 8:30 p.m.
