DETROIT (10/31/2012) --
The day is 24 hours long and for the Titan women's basketball team, that is plenty of time for practice, hitting the books, and giving back to the community as the team recently completed a few service projects.

Along with the community service last week, Detroit still has another event planned for this Sunday as the Titans team up with the Marygrove women's basketball squad to clean up the mile-stretch of McNichols between Wyoming and Livernois. The clean up will precede the exhibition contest versus Marygove on Monday at 7:00 p.m.

Last Wednesday, the Titans joined the University of Detroit Mercy nursing program and "Roary", the mascot for the Detroit Lions, for a health fair at a local apartment complex. The health fair was designed to help young kids get tested for diseases such as diabetes. In between the tests, the Titan freshmen were on hand to entertain the children as well as promote physical activity.

“It was a lot of fun helping the kids,” said freshman guard Tayelor McCalister. “The kids had a lot of fun and it was great to see them smile. It is just good to get out there and help the community and to give the kids someone to look up to, not only as a player, but more importantly as a person.”

On Friday, UDM booked its day full as members of the team visited the second grade at Legacy Charter Academy in Detroit. The three Titan players participated in reading and writing exercises with the kids.

“I felt very touched and very honored to be a blessing to somebody's life because there are people that are not as fortunate as I am and it just made me feel blessed to help them,” said senior guard Demeisha Fambro.

At the end of the day, the full Titan squad visited COTS in Detroit to help out with a soup kitchen. The team helped prepare the meals and handed out food to the people in the local homeless shelter. COTS' mission is to alleviate homelessness by providing shelter, meals and an array of services which enable people to achieve economic self-sufficiency and decent affordable housing. COTS advocates for long-term solutions to the problem of homelessness.

The team is continuing their work by helping to sell raffle tickets for the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Foundation at Wednesday night's Detroit Pistons season-opening game.
