Titan Scoring Legends Reflect On Brown’s Record Night

DETROIT (12/13/12) -- If you missed it, the Titan women's basketball record book needed an eraser after sophomore Shareta Brown broke the school record with 43 points in Detroit's 101-50 victory over Lourdes on Monday.

The 43 points broke Jeanie Hill's 42-point outburst at Northern Illinois on Feb. 15, 1997, as well as Cassandra Pack's Calihan Hall record of 39 against Xavier on Jan. 12, 1987. It was also just the ninth 40-point effort by a player in the MCC/Horizon League era and the fourth highest total.

Brown was 17-of-22 from the field and 9-of-10 from the free throw line. The 17 field goals set another career high for her and she needed just 26 minutes of action to break the record. For those wondering about the competition, she had 35 points in just 25 minutes of court time two weeks ago against Western Michigan, and now has five games in her career with 30 or more points.

“I really don't think about it, said Brown. “I am just trying to help my team out. It is not always about me, but they (Lourdes) kept letting me get the ball in the block and I had to do what I had to do.”

Even head coach Autumn Rademacher – who knows a thing or two about scoring standing third in school history with 1,686 points – was amazed by Brown's night.

“It was pretty spectacular, her efficiency on the block. She just had great position and we work really hard feeding the post,” said Coach Rademacher.

Hill (1994-98) had high regards for Brown too although like any normal competitor with pride, she didn't want to lose a record.

“When I got the message, I was like oh no,” said Hill. “You never want your record to be broken, but what a great game for her. My record stood for about 15 years and I remember that day and just all of us coming together as a team.”

Hill was 17-of-24 from the field, 4-of-6 from three and a perfect 4-of-4 from the free throw line as she led the Titans to a 93-70 victory over the NIU Huskies. The win was the fourth straight of an 11-game winning streak that propelled UDM to its first Horizon League Championship and NCAA Tournament appearance.

Hill recalls that she didn't know how many points she had scored or that she was even near the record until she was told with under five minutes left in the game. To that point in her career – she was a junior – her career-best was 27 points and in fact, she would never top more than 24 points in a game after that.

“I remember my coach (Nikita Lowry) told me with about five minutes left that I was just two points away from the record and then I got it and she took me out. I said no, leave me in, I want more,” a laughing Hill commented. “I really didn't realize what I had during the game until that point. We were playing really well and my teammates kept finding me and it was just all working.”

“We were determined to win the conference and all of us just coming together on that kind of night helped us achieve that goal later in the season,” added Hill.

She finished her career with 1,199 points, which is still 12th in school history.

While Hill was a consistent scorer over her four years who had it all come together one night to own the record, Pack (1983-87) was a scoring machine the minute she stepped on campus and is still Detroit's all-time leading scorer with 2,037 points. She was a Freshman All-American in 1984, a three-time All-North Star Conference selection, and a First Team All-MCC honoree and the MCC Player of the Year as a senior.

“That is just a fantastic effort on her (Brown) part,” said Pack. “You always want to be on top, but I wish her the best in catching all the records because it is a great honor to have.”

Pack was simply amazing when she set the Calihan Hall record of 39 against Xavier hitting 18 of her 19 shots, including 13-straight at one time. It was one of six 30-point games in her career as she averaged no less than 17.4 ppg., in her four years, with her career high of 22.5 as a senior in 1986-87. She held the top two marks for single-season scoring with 576 points in 1987 and 545 in 1986, but those were broken by Brown's 611 last year as a freshman.

Pack remembers how hard she had to work and how much help her teammates were to her.

“My team gave me the ball, but I had to work or that wasn't going to be the case,” said Pack. “If I didn't work hard, I wasn't going to get the ball so we were always pushing each other.”

Pack was inducted into the Titan Hall of Fame in 2010 and it was after her career was over that she remembers more about her playing days.

“It wasn't until years later when I was working camps in the area and I met a young girl who would pass away with an illness, and she knew about me and my playing time at U-D.  I also have co-workers who google my name and see some of my accomplishments and it really takes me back.”

Brown and the Titans will be back in action on Tuesday as they travel to Fort Wayne, Ind., to face IPFW, with a rare tip time of 11:30 a.m.

The women's basketball team will also host an alumni reunion next Saturday, Dec. 22, following its game against Madonna. For more information and how to RSVP, click here.
