DETROIT (12/28/12) –The University of Detroit Mercy men's basketball team will look to extend its home winning streak to 15-straight games when it hosts Canisius on Sunday, Dec. 30 at Calihan Hall. The game, which is part of the Chevrolet Gotham Classic, is scheduled to begin at 3:00 p.m. and will be streamed live online by the Horizon League Network.
Sunday is also a Jesuit Basketball Spotlight game highlighted by a matchup in which both head coaches have their sons as a part of the team. Ticket specials are available including Buy One Get One free tickets for fathers and sons who attend the game. Also, the Holiday Four Pack is still being offered -- Four game tickets plus an autographed replica jersey for $40.
CHEVROLET GOTHAM CLASSIC
Detroit joined Syracuse and Temple, two of the winningest programs in college basketball history, in the inaugural Chevrolet Gotham Classic. Along with the Titans, Orange, and Owls, Alcorn State and Canisius are also be part of the field.
The format of the Chevrolet Gotham Classic features 10 games with all five teams playing each other once. The Titans opened play at then-No. 3/3 Syracuse with a hard fought 72-68 loss, before traveling to Mississippi where the Titans grabbed their first road win of the season 74-58 over Alcorn State. After the holiday break, the Detroit-Temple game was postponed due to weather conditions, and will be rescheduled at a later date. The Titans will conclude the Gotham Classic at home against Canisius on Sunday.

LAST TIME OUT
All five starters scored in double figures as the University of Detroit Mercy men's basketball team grabbed its first road win with a 74-58 topping of Alcorn State Wednesday afternoon as part of the Chevrolet Gotham Classic at the Davey L. Whitney Complex. The Titans used an 18-0 run in the second half to put the game out of reach.
Ray McCallum recorded a game-high 19 points and five assists to lead the Titans, while
Doug Anderson scored 15 points with five rebounds and two blocked shots.
Nick Minnerath pitched in 13 points, while
Jason Calliste and Juwan Howard, Jr. each added 12.
Detroit (7-5) won the battle on the boards, 24-20, and forced 13 Alcorn turnovers, while distributing 15 assists. Detroit shot 51.8 percent overall, including 61.5 in the second half, while the Braves finished shooting 44.2 percent.
SERIES WITH CANISIUS
This will be the 31st meeting between Detroit and Canisius, with the Titans owning a 16-14 lead. The first meeting between the two Jesuit schools came in 1912, with Canisius winning 35-19. The Titans first win in the series came seven years later when Detroit topped the Griffs 40-17 in 1919. Canisius won the last meeting 75-72 at Calihan Hall during the 2006-07 season.
ABOUT THE GRIFFS
Canisius (9-3) is coming off an 87-74 win over Alcorn State as part of the Chevrolet Gotham Classic on Thursday at the Koessler Athletic Center. The Golden Griffins scored 26 second-chance points and four players scored in double figures, led by senior guard Isaac Sosa who had a team-high 21 points.
Sosa scored his 21 points after he went 8-for-12 from the field and 5-for-9 from 3-point range to go with three rebounds and two assists. Junior Billy Baron added 19 points, five assists, four rebounds and a steal to the Blue and Gold's efforts, while juniors Jordan Heath and Chris Manhertz chipped in 14 and 11 points, respectively. As a team, Canisius shot 48.2 percent from the floor and 39.1 percent from 3-point land and ended the night holding a 41-25 advantage on the glass, with Manhertz pulling down a game-high eight rebounds in the victory.
Canisius, which is receiving 34 votes in the CollegeInsider.com Mid-Major Top 25 Poll, topped Temple 72-62 in Philadelphia last week as part of the Chevrolet Gotham Classic.

McCALLUM NAMED TO COUSY AWARD WATCH LIST
Detroit junior guard
Ray McCallum was named the watch list for the 2013 Bob Cousy Collegiate Point Guard of the Year Award. This marks the second-straight year that McCallum has been named to the Cousy watch list as he was a Final 20 honoree last season.
The annual honor, named for Hall of Famer and former Boston Celtic Bob Cousy, recognizes the top point guards in men's college basketball. Over 80 candidates have been nominated for the 2013 Bob Cousy Award. McCallum currently leads the Horizon League in scoring (18.5 ppg.) and assists (4.8 apg.).
TITANS RECEIVE VOTES IN MID-MAJOR POLL
Detroit, which has posted a 5-1 record over its last six games, is now receiving votes in the CollegeInsider.com Mid-Major Top 25 Poll. The Titans have a total of 19 points in this week's edition of the poll, and is also one of five Horizon League teams represented. UIC is ranked 17th and Valparaiso 18th, while Youngstown State, Loyola (10) and Wright State (4) are receiving votes.
HOWARD HAS RANGE
Detroit forward Juwan Howard, Jr. is currently riding a six game scoring streak of reaching double figures. Over that stretch the sophomore has averaged 14.6 ppg., and has connected on 58.6 percent (17-29) of three pointers taken. For the season Howard leads the team and ranks third in the Horizon League with a 48.9 three point shooting percentage.
TITANS LOVE CALIHAN
Detroit is 6-0 this year at home and has won 14 straight games at Calihan Hall dating back to last season. The 14 game home winning streak is tied for the 11th longest in the nation. The Titans have averaged 77.8 points per game over that stretch, while only allowing opponents to score 65.2 points on Dick Vitale Court. Detroit's last loss at home came on Jan. 6, 2012 against Valparaiso, 73-71.
DETROIT LOVES THE 80's
This season the Titans are a perfect 5-0 when scoring 80 or more points and have extended their winning streak to 19 games when doing so. Last year Detroit finished undefeated (9-0) when reaching the 80-point mark. The Last time the Titans lost a game when scoring 80 points or more came at Milwaukee during the 2010-11 season, when the Panthers won in overtime 84-81.
LEADING THE LEAGUE
Detroit currently leads the Horizon League in five team categories including scoring offense by averaging 76.6 points per game. The Titans also lead in three point field goals made (103), steals (108), turnover margin (+5.2) and assist to turnover ratio (1.3). Detroit also ranks second in assists (177) and blocked shots (49).
CLIMBING THE CHARTS
Detroit junior
Ray McCallum currently leads the Titans in three categories this season scoring (18.5 ppg), assists (4.8 apg) and steals (1.66 spg.) and is also climbing up the career record board in all three. McCallum has 1,223 points (23rd), 362 assist (9th) and 131 steals (13th) in his career. The last Titan to rank among the top-10 in all three of those categories was Rashad Phillips '01. Phillips finished his spectacular career with 2,319 points (1st), 548 assists (4th) and 190 steals (2nd). McCallum needs 379 points and nine steals to reach that plateau.
