MAAC Official Release
EDISON, N.J. -- Off his record-setting performance, Titan sophomore
Joel Matthews (St. Catharines, ON/Holy Cross) earned the MAAC's Offensive Player of the Week, announced the conference office on Monday.
Matthews set a school record with eight points on a career-best seven goals in leading the Titans to a 17-12 victory on the road at Canisius in their conference opener. It was the 10th hat trick of his career and his third-straight on the season.
The seven goals tied a school record – with current sophomore
Shayne Adams – and he needed just eight shots for that offensive production. He also picked up two ground balls and had a caused turnover.
Matthews – who was named to the Tewaaraton Award Watch List earlier in the season - currently leads the MAAC in scoring with 4.38 points per game as well as with 22 overall goals. He ranks ninth in the country in points per game, 14th in goals per game (2.75) and 24th in assists per game (1.63).
It is the first time in his career that he was tabbed the Offensive Player of the Week after winning the Rookie POW four times in 2010. He is also the third Titan to take home a weekly MAAC honor as
Jordan Houtby was selected the Defensive Player of the Week last Monday and
Scott Drummond has twice earned the Rookie of the Week this year.
Detroit is back in action this Saturday when the red, white and blue host Marist in another MAAC contest. Game time is set for Noon at Titan Field.
