SOUTHFIELD, Mich. -- It was a time to look back at the accomplishments so far and the goals that lie ahead as the Detroit men's lacrosse program held its yearly banquet on Friday evening at Plum Hollows Country Club in Southfield.
Parents, players and staff were all gathered for the event, which started with a blessing from sophomore
Joe MacLean followed by a great dinner. All of those in attendance were also entertained with a slideshow of pictures from the season.
The coaching staff honored all the class groups with the seniors last receiving special praise as the first four-year senior class in Titan history. These individuals -
Jon Bemben,
Scott Harris,
Brad Janer,
Tim Lehto,
Ty Maruyama,
Jason McDonald,
Adam Nolan,
John Nowicki,
Adam Parrottino and
Danny Preston - have seen the program rise from a winless campaign in 2009 to just one game away from the NCAA Tournament last season and in the thick of things in the MAAC this year.
The yearly awards were then handed out as sophomore
Shayne Adams received the Offensive Player of the Year, while junior defensemen
Jamie Hebden was selected the Defensive Player of the Year. Senior
John Nowicki was tabbed the Coaches Award winner and the biggest accolade of the night went to junior
A.J. Levell as he was honored as team MVP.
“He has definitely carried us on his back in a few games and has won games for us and I believe that is what an MVP does,” said head coach Matt Holtz.
The four Titan captains in Hebden, Janer, Maruyama and McDonald then took over with a short speech thanking the coaches and Athletic Director Keri Gaither for the opportunity to play lacrosse and build this program.
The evening then closed with a tribute video on the year produced by Athletic Trainer Kyle Bowen.
