Men’s Lacrosse Hits The Road To VMI With No. 2 Seed On Its Mind

Live Stats

DETROIT -- Needing just a win to finish in second place and with the No. 2 seed in the upcoming MAAC Championship, the Detroit men's lacrosse team will make its way to Virginia to face VMI on Saturday in the regular season finale for both teams. Game time is set for 2:00 p.m., at Sprinturf Field.

Detroit is 6-7 on the year and 3-2 in the MAAC. A Titan win or a Marist loss against Canisius will clinch the No. 2 seed for the tournament setting up a 2-3 match-up for the Titans for the second year in a row. Last year, UDM tied for second at 4-2 and was the No. 3 seed ousting second-seeded Marist in the semifinals.

Only Detroit and Siena have clinched a berth so far with the other two spots still up for grabs among three teams, Canisius (2-3 MAAC), Jacksonville (3-3)  and Marist (3-2). A win by the Red Foxes would eliminate Canisius and give the Dolphins the No. 4 seed.  But, if the Golden Griffins were to go on the road and defeat Marist, it would create a three-way tie at 3-3 (If Detroit was to fall at VMI, it would be a four-way tie, but the Titans own the tiebreaker over all three teams giving them the No. 2 seed) with the tiebreaker falling all the way to goals allowed among the three teams.

The MAAC Championship will be held from May 4-6 in Poughkeepsie, NY, on the campus of Marist College.

Sophomore Shayne Adams has taken over the team lead in goals with 30 – second in the MAAC – and is also second on the team with 34 points. Despite missing the last two games, sophomore Joel Matthews tops the team in points (39) – a number that has him fifth in the league - and assists (15), while sophomore Alex Maini just passed his rookie year numbers for points (30) and assists (14) and is just three goals away from matching the 19 he had as a freshman.

Detroit is 2-0 all-time against VMI with both victories coming in the Motor City. The Titans downed the Keydets last year, 13-9, and 11-8 in 2010.

Junior Chris Nemes netted three goals and Adams tallied a pair of markers and helpers in last year's win. Senior John Nowicki has three goals and two assists in the two games, while senior Ty Maruyama has three career goals versus VMI.

Junior A.J. Levell has 26 career saves and an 8.5 goals against average in the two games, while junior Jamie Hebden has totaled six caused turnovers and five ground balls.
