Titans Mourn the loss of former standout Doug Chappell '84

DETROIT (9/12/12) -- The University of Detroit Mercy was saddened to hear about the loss of former men's basketball team captain and All-MCC selection Doug Chappell '84, who passed away on Monday.

He is survived by his wife (Kelly), four children (Courtney Chappell, Justin (Abby) Giddings, Jay Morris, and Kayleigh Morris), two grandchildren (Joslyn Rose, Hallie Hunter), and six siblings (Brian, Brent, Deb Mokma, Mark, Steve and Craig).

A 6-7 forward, Chappell was a four year letterman at Detroit from 1979-84 and finished his career with 1,169 points - which stands 24th all-time in Titan history, but was 13th when he graduated. In his career, he averaged 11.2 points and 5.7 rebounds per game, and was  selected the Bob Calihan Team MVP as a senior, the John Kirwan award winner for offensive production  as a junior and the Dave DeBusschere award honoree for most improved as a redshirt freshman.

His best season came as a junior in 1982-83, when he led the team in scoring (17.6) and rebounding (8.1) earning All-League honors as well as Honorable Mention All-Midwest by the Sporting News and Basketball Weekly. He posted a career-best 28 points in his final game as a junior, guiding the Titans to a first-round victory over Oral Roberts in the MCC Tournament. He also recorded a career-best 18 rebounds earlier that season against Grand Valley.

He came to the University in 1979, but redshirted his freshman year due to an ankle injury. He then tallied 6.1 and 5.6 ppg., respectively, in his first two years on the court before his outstanding junior campaign, and ended his career averaging 14.4 ppg., as a senior co-captain.

In his last three years at Detroit, he played alongside his brother in 6-8 forward Steve Chappell.

Chappell came to Detroit from Rogers High School in Wyoming, Mich. He was tabbed All-State in Class B as a senior after recording 22 points and 14 rebounds per game. He ended his prep career as Rogers' all-time leading scorer (1300) and rebounder (718), and was also a varsity member of the baseball and football teams.

He graduated from Detroit in 1984 with a degree in history.

Visitation will be from 6-9 p.m., on Thursday at The Lee Chapel, Sytsema Funeral Homes, Inc., in Norton Shores, and at 2-4 and 6-9 p.m., on Friday at Matthysse Kuiper DeGraff Funeral Home in Wyoming.

Funeral Services will be at 11 a.m., on Saturday at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Wyoming.
