2012-13 Men's Basketball Schedule

DETROIT (9/18/12)
-- A slate that includes a robust 14 games against teams that qualified for postseason play a year ago highlights the 2012-13 University of Detroit Mercy men's basketball schedule, officially announced on Tuesday. The Titans' tough ledger includes non-conference tilts against BCS schools Syracuse, Pittsburgh, and Miami (Fla.).

"I'm excited about our schedule," said head coach Ray McCallum. "Its one of the best I've been associated with in terms of high major talented teams that are picked among the top of their respected conferences and played in the postseason last year.”

The Titans open with a pair of exhibition games on Oct. 27 and Nov. 3 against Ryerson (Ont.) and Tiffin, respectively, before they tip-off their regular season on Friday, Nov. 9 against Northern Michigan at Calihan Hall. UDM will then invade the Big Apple to face St. John's as part of the ESPN College Hoops Tip-Off Marathon. The game is set for Tuesday, Nov. 13, at 2 p.m., at Carnesecca Arena and will be televised live on ESPN. A Saturday home game against Drake follows to wrap-up the Titans first week of action. The Bulldogs won 18 games last season and advanced to the second round of the CollegeInsider.com Tournament (CIT).

Detroit will then play three road games against Miami (Nov. 24), Bowling Green (Nov. 27) and Pittsburgh (Dec. 1). All three opponents made the postseason last year highlighted by Pittsburgh winning the College Basketball Invitational (CBI) title, while the Hurricanes competed in the NIT and the Falcons the CIT.

The Titans return home for a three game set against a pair of Mid-American Conference opponents in Toledo (Dec. 5) and Akron (Dec. 15), with a game against Alabama State squeezed in between the two on Monday, Dec. 10. Both Toledo and Akron reached the postseason last year with the Rockets competing in the CIT, while Akron reached the MAC title game, before playing in the NIT.

Detroit will then join Syracuse and Temple, two of the winningest programs in college basketball history, in the inaugural Gotham Classic. The Titans will open play on Monday, December 17 at Syracuse (ESPNU) before traveling to Mississippi to face Alcorn State on Wednesday, December 19. After the Christmas Break, Detroit travels to Temple to play the Owls on Friday, December 28, before concluding the Classic at home against Canisius on Sunday, December 30. The Orange finished last season with 34-3 record and were the No. 1 seed in the NCAA East Region, where they reached the Elite 8. Temple also competed in the NCAA Tournament and finished the season with a 24-8 record.

Horizon League play opens for the Titans the following week with a pair of home games against Milwaukee and Green Bay. Both the Panthers and the Phoenix posted winning records in league play last year, while Milwaukee competed in the postseason with a trip to the CIT. Detroit will hit the road for a pair of games against Youngstown State (Jan. 10) and Cleveland State (Jan. 12), before hosting Valparaiso (Jan. 17) in the much anticipated rematch of the Horizon League Championship game that will be televised during 'Rivalry week' on ESPN2.

Detroit will also compete in the Sears BracketBusters weekend on Saturday, Feb. 23, where it will travel to face an opponent that will be announced mid-season.
