THE DETROIT-WESTERN MICHIGAN SERIES
The Titans won their third in a row in the series last season and now lead the all-time battle, 14-13. UDM will look to win four in a row in the series for the third time and the first since 1994-97.
The first career meeting was on Jan. 15, 1979, in the Motor City as Detroit won 76-57.
The game will be the home opener for Western Michigan. UDM is 4-8 all-time in Kalamazoo, but broke a four-game slide on the road in the series in 2011 when the Titans earned a 73-64 win.
ABOUT THE BRONCOS
Western Michigan returns 11 letter winners from last year's squad that went 11-20 overall and 6-10 in the MAC, advancing to the second round of the MAC Tournament.
Sophomore Miracle Woods - the team's leading scorer last season - is back on top the Broncos' offensive charge posting 20 points and 7.0 rebounds per game. A.J. Johnson is tallying 11.0 ppg., 3.0 rpg., and 3.0 apg., while Jazmine Windham is averaging 8. ppg.
WMU started the year with a win at Massachusetts, 66-58, but then fell at Albany, 77-61.
The Broncos were selected to finish fifth in the West Division in the league's preseason poll, voted on by the 12 head coaches in the MAC.
LAST TIME OUT
The 61st season of Calihan Hall began in winning fashion as Detroit used a huge run at the end of the first half to blow away Lawrence Tech, 84-60, on Monday night.
All five Titans were in double figures led by senior
Senee Shearer's 14 points. Junior
Ellisha Crosby had 13 points and a team-high eight rebounds and sophomore
Rosanna Reynolds tallied 12 points and a game-high seven assists with five steals. Senior
Megan Hatter and sophomore
Tayelor McCalister each posted 10 points and four rebounds apiece with McCalister adding four assists.
The run occurred with 6:26 left in the first half as the Blue Devils closed to within three, 30-27, on the strength of a 12-3 run, but the red, white, and blue would end the first period on a 20-4 spurt to take a 50-31 lead at the break.
Once Detroit got rolling, Lawrence Tech could not stop the charge as a 17-6 run from the Titans opened a 67-37 lead with 13:40 left in the contest and from that point on, UDM cruised to the 24-point victory.
Detroit outrebounded LTU, 46-36, and forced 26 turnovers with 14 steals. UDM also handed out 23 assists and shot 43.5% from the field. The 23 helpers were the most since posting 23 in the Horizon League Championship Quarterfinals win over Wright State last season.
GET READY FOR THE MAC
The game against Western Michigan marks the first of four against members of the MAC for the Titans on the season. UDM will host Ball State and Eastern Michigan, while visiting Toledo.
Detroit is 74-62 all-time against current teams from the Mid-American Conference.
Since head coach Autumn Rademacher took over the reins as the Titan leader in 2008, UDM is 10-7 against the league – and 9-4 in its last 13 games.
COACH RAD KNOWS A THING OR TWO ABOUT WMU
Titan head coach Autumn Rademacher knows Western Michigan pretty well as her first coaching job was as an assistant with the Broncos.
She spent seven seasons (1997-04) at the Kalamazoo school helping WMU to a 108-100 mark, which included a 2003 NCAA Tournament bid following its Mid-American Conference tournament title.
AGAINST THE GREAT LAKES STATE
UDM is 105-64 all-time against teams from the Michigan, and 11-4 since the start of the 2010-11 season, with the only losses coming to Michigan (2x) and Michigan State (2x).
FIVE ALIVE
Detroit had five players - all starters - reach double figures in scoring in its win over Lawrence Tech, the first time that has happened since a 90-43 win over Madonna last season.
MY BALL
Detroit has forced 47 turnovers through the first two games, with 26 against Lawrence Tech and 21 in the season opener at Canisius.
The 26 turnovers were the most by an opponent since Jan. 31, 2009 when Wright State committed 32.
UDM also has 25 steals in the first two games with 14 its last time out against the Blue Devils. The 14 thefts were the most since taking 14 against Cleveland State in the quarterfinals of the HL Championship in 2012, a 79-43 win.
OFFENSE FROM DEFENSE
The Titan defensive pressure has led to some fast-break points and instant offense for Detroit.
Through two games, UDM has a 51-22 advantage for points off turnovers, including 32-9 against Lawrence Tech.
HOISTING UP A RECORD
Detroit tied a school record with 31 three-point attempts in the season opener at Canisius, making six in the game.
Last season, UDM attempted a school record 661 three-pointers, breaking the record of 593 thrown up during the 2005-06 season.
UDM was also close to setting a record for makes with 210, three away from the 213 it hit during the 2005-06 campaign.
GETTING SHOTS UP
UDM put up 70 total shots in the season opener at Canisius, the most since the Titans threw up 70 at Loyola on Jan. 31, 2008.
The Titans then came back and went 30-of-69 against Lawrence Tech, the most made field goals since posting 31 at Loyola last year.
COACH RAD LOOKING FOR A RECORD
Head coach Autumn Rademacher is in her sixth year coaching her alma mater, where she has an 84-78 record and is currently in third place in UDM history in wins, just nine away from the school record held by her coach in college Fred Procter (93, 1990-96) and seven away from DeWayne Jones (91, 1983-90).
It is not like Coach Rademacher took over a top of the line program as UDM was coming off back-to-back last-place finishes and just 11 total wins from 2006-08.
In her first five years, Detroit has posted three winning seasons, a 20-win campaign, five-straight years with a conference tournament victory and a trip to the WNIT in 2012 - the first postseason action for UDM since the 1997 NCAA Tournament - and a WBI Championship last season, the first postseason title since 1981.
SHEARER NOW TOP 7 IN 3'S
With a pair of 3-pointers in the season opener at Canisius and another two against Lawrence Tech, senior
Senee Shearer now has sole possession of seventh place on the Titan all-time list with 138 career trifectas.
Shearer is just 22 away from sixth place and Brigid Mulroy's ('10) 160.
She will have a chance at the top spot trailing Titan head coach
Autumn Rademacher '97 by 63 (201) for second and school record-holder Michelle James '02 by 79 (217).
FRESHMEN CONTRIBUTIONS
Detroit played four of its six freshmen in the season opener at Canisius and now five through the first two games. Rookie
Tayla Gibb is set to redshirt this season.
Haleigh Ristovski played the most minutes in the season opener at Canisius with 20 and pulled down five rebounds in the process with two steals. Versus Lawrence Tech, she had two points, two rebounds and two assists.
Minisha Frederick-Childress had six points, two assists and a steal in nine minutes against Canisius and then tallied two points and three rebounds versus LTU, while
Reyna Montgomery added two points and three boards in nine minutes in the opener and five points with five boards in the win over the Blue Devils.
Freshman
Lizzy Connors had a rebound in five minutes of court time against Canisius and recorded her first collegiate basket vs. Lawrence Tech, while
Megan Galloway saw four minutes of action in her collegiate debut on Monday.
DOUBLE DEBUT
Junior
Ellisha Crosby waited two years to get back on the court and she had a strong game in her Division I debut posting a double-double and leading the team with 15 points, 11 rebounds and three steals at Canisius.
Crosby - who scored over 2,600 points in high school - leads the team in scoring (14.0) and rebounding (9.5) and also has five assists and three steals on the year.
WHAT A FRIEND
Even though she is not the starting "point guard" this season, sophomore
Rosanna Reynolds knows how to get everyone involved in the offense as she leads the team with nine total assists against just two turnovers.
In her latest effort versus Lawrence Tech, Reynolds tallied 12 points, seven assists, six rebounds and a career-high five steals.
The seven helpers were the most since
Demeisha Fambro had eight against Wright State in last year's Horizon League Championship Quarterfinals victory, while the five steals were the most since
Senee Shearer had five last season at IPFW.
IT'S TAY TIME
Tayelor McCalister had a fine start to her sophomore year finishing with career highs in points (11) and assists (4), while also coming away with two steals in 35 minutes at Canisius.
She then came back with 10 points, four assists and a career-high four rebounds against Lawrence Tech.
Through two games, she is averaging 10.5 points, 4.0 assists, 2.0 rebounds and 1.5 steals per game.
GETTING TO 70
The Titans are 44-8 when they score 70 or more points- including 15-3 last year - as well as 13-2 when they score 80 or more under head coach Autumn Rademacher.
SCORE, SCORE, SCORE
UDM scored 70 or more points 18 times last year and led the Horizon League with 70.2 ppg., while finishing second in the conference in field-goal percentage (44.5%) and third in three-point field-goal percentage (31.8%).
MAKING AN IMPACT
Sophomore
DaVonna Bradford saw her first action of the season against Lawrence Tech and the second-year forward gave some strong minutes with career high four points and four rebounds in nine minutes.
ID PLEASE
The Titans will be extremely young this season with six freshmen and nine underclassmen in uniform.
UDM also has two other players who have played just one collegiate season as they begin their junior year academically, and just two seniors dot the roster in
Senee Shearer (82 games, 48 starts) and
Megan Hatter (89 games, 49 starts).
In fact, if you look at the entire roster, Shearer and Hatter's 171 combined career games played are 51 more than the total of everyone else who has played in college at any level:
Rosanna Reynolds (36),
Ellisha Crosby (32),
Tayelor McCalister (21),
Brie Wilcox (14) and
DaVonna Bradford (8), Lindsey Connors (2),
Minisha Frederick-Childress (2),
Reyna Montgomery (2),
Haleigh Ristovski (2) and
Megan Galloway (1).
GOT TO REBOUND
Despite playing with four guards most of the time, Detroit won the battle of the boards by 10, 46-36, over Lawrence Tech this past Monday.
Detroit outrebounded its opponents 26 times last season - including 11 times by double digits - and ended the year with a +6.0 rebounding margin, good for first in the Horizon League and 40th in the nation.
61st SEASON OF HISTORIC CALIHAN HALL
The 2013-14 season is the 61st in the history of Calihan Hall, an athletic complex that has seen some great moments in Titan history.
Calihan Hall houses the Titan Athletic Offices, varsity and intramural locker rooms, sports medicine facilities, the Thelma Fox Murray running track, the Wayne Wheeler Golf Practice Center and the Larry Bleach Fitness Center. It also serves as the basketball practice facility for the Titans all year.
The arena also continues to serve as the host site for numerous games involving the Detroit Public School League, Catholic League and the Michigan High School Boys State Tournament.
The dedication of the University's Memorial Building, as it was known back then, took place May 25, 1952. The first basketball game was played Dec. 2 of that year when the U-D men beat Kalamazoo, 75-61.
In 1977, the 8,295-seat facility's name was changed to Calihan Hall in honor of the Titans' first basketball All-American, the late Bob Calihan. Following graduation in 1940 and a professional career in the National Basketball League — with stops in Detroit, Chicago and Rochester — Calihan returned to U-D in 1948 as the Titans' head coach. In 21 years at the helm, he compiled a 306-237 record, guiding his 1962 team to the NCAA Tournament and three others into the NIT. He also served 13 years as U-D's athletic director, retiring in 1977.
Most recently, the dedication of the court to former Titan head coach and athletic director Dick Vitale in December of 2012 brought a brand new, state-of-the-art hardwood floor for the home of the Detroit Titans men's and women's basketball teams.
On the women's side, the Titans longest homecourt winning streak during its years at Calihan Hall is 17 consecutive victories, which was rolled up during the 1985-86 and 1986-87 seasons. The 1986-87 streak included a 13-0 home record, which is part of the reason the Titans captured the MCC title during their first year of play in the conference. In Detroit's history, the Titans have compiled six home winning streaks of 11 games or more.
