Titans Conclude Road Trip at BGSU on Sunday

– The University of Detroit Mercy men's basketball team will conclude its three game road trip with a visit to Bowling Green on Sunday, Dec. 22. The game is scheduled to tip-off at 2:00 p.m. at the Stroh Center and can be listened to live on 97.1 The Ticket's webstream online with Dan Leach the voice of Titans Basketball.

LAST OUTING
The Akron Zips opened the second half with a 25-6 run, en route to scoring 58 points in the second stanza to top the University of Detroit Mercy men's basketball team, 79-60, Wednesday night at James A. Rhodes Arena. The Titans led 30-21 at the half, before the Zips made three-straight three pointers to tie the game to open the second half.

Detroit (5-7) was led by sophomore guard Anton Wilson who finished with 16 points - 11 in the second half - while junior forward Juwan Howard Jr. pitched in 13 points and senior co-captain Evan Bruinsma added 12 points and six rebounds.

Detroit opened the game with a 9-0 run over the first four minutes of action, before a three-pointer from Deji Ibitayo put the Zips on the board 9-3. The Titans then answered back with an 11-3 run to build a 20-6 lead with nine minutes left in the opening stanza. Akron would trim the lead to 22-15 with just over four minutes remaining, before the Titans took a 30-21 lead into the locker room. Howard led Detroit with nine points, while Bruinsma added seven.

Detroit finished shooting 36.1 percent (22-of-61) overall, while Akron shot 48.1 percent (26-of-54) overall, including an unheard of 71.4 percent (20-of-28) in the second half. The Titans finished 7-of-18 from downtown, while the Zips finished 11-of-21 from beyond the arc, including 9-of-12 in the second stanza.

ABOUT THE FALCONS
The Falcons posted a 67-61 road win over Morehead State on Sunday (Dec. 15) at the Johnson Arena in Morehead, Ky. With the win, BGSU improved to 5-5 on the year, while also recording its first non-conference road win since a 61-53 win at FIU on Dec. 22, 2011.

BGSU recorded a season-high 14 blocked shots, the third-straight game that the Falcons have recorded 10 or more blocks as a team, and held the Eagles to 30.6 percent (22-of-72) shooting for the game.

All five starters scored in double figures for the Falcons for the third time this season, led by senior center Cameron Black's double-double of 11 points and 12 rebounds, his third of the year. Black also tallied a career-high five blocked shots, while Richaun Holmes, who had a game-high 17 points, matched his career-high with seven blocks for the second straight game.

SERIES WITH BGSU
This will be the 39th meeting between Detroit and Bowling Green, with the Titans leading the all-time series 23-15. BGSU has won the last two meetings including a 70-65 win at the Stroh Center on Nov. 27, 2012. The last win for Detroit in the series was a 71-62 victory on Nov. 27, 2010 at Calihan Hall.

FOLLOW YOUR CAPTAINS
Detroit co-captains Juwan Howard Jr. and Evan Bruinsma are definitely leading the Titans and it shows on the court as they both sit atop of the charts in a couple of catagories. In scoring Howard and Bruinsma rank first and second with 17.2 and 12.4 points per game, respectively, while Bruinsma leads the team on the glass with 7.8 rebounds per game and Howard is right behind him with 6.3 boards per game.

In the Horizon League Howard ranks fifth in scoring and ninth in rebounds, while Bruinsma ranks 16th in scoring and second on the glass.

BRUINSMA NAMED HL SCHOLAR ATHLETE OF THE MONTH
Detroit senior forward Evan Bruinsma has been named the Horizon League's Male Scholar-Athlete of the Month for November.

Bruinsma carries a 3.8 GPA as a business administration major and was a member of the Horizon League Honor Roll in the Fall and Spring of 2012-13. He was also named to the 2013 UDM Athletic Director's Honor Roll and nominated for the 2014 NABC Good Works Team.

Bruinsma led the Titans on the court with a career-high 32 points, 14 rebounds and set the Horizon League record for free throws in a game with 20 against Stony Brook. He has scored in double digits in four-straight games and is averaging 20.7 points and 10.2 rebounds per game over that stretch.

TITAN CHARITY
Entering Wednesday's game the Titans lead the Horizon League and rank 10th in the nation in free throw shooting percentage. Detroit is shooting 77.2 percent (213-of-276) as a team from the charity stripe including a whopping 83.4 percent (116-of-139) over the last five games.

BLOCK PARTY
The Titans have recorded 60 blocked shots through their first 12 games and are averaging 5.0 blocked shots per game which ranks 47th in the nation. Detroit recorded a season-high 13 blocks against U-M Dearborn, which were the most for the Titans since swatting 17 against Western Michigan in 1978.

Senior center Ugochukwu Njoku leads Detroit with 20 blocked shots and has recorded at least two blocks in four games this year, including a career-high five against U-M Dearborn.

UP NEXT
Detroit will be back on Dick Vitale Court on Monday, Dec. 23 for a midday meeting against Indian Tech. Tip-off is scheduled for 12 p.m. and will be streamed live online through HLN Detroit.
