Mike Birney had three goals, while juniors
Shayne Adams and
Alex Maini each tallied two goals and an assist. Freshman
Ryan Callaghan also had two helpers which led him to be named the MAAC's Rookie of the Week this past Monday.
Navy was picked to finish fifth in the Patriot League's preseason poll after finishing last season tied for fourth with a 6-6 record, 3-3 in conference play.
Navy opened the season with a 20-7 win against VMI last week as 12 different Midshipmen found the back of the net with three coming from Sam Jones and Erik Hoffstadt. Navy outshot VMI, 58-26, and dominated ground balls, 46-23, while forcing the Keydets to turn it over 25 times.
Navy returns five starters from last year's squad, including junior attackmen Tucker Hull. Hull is a Preseason All-America selection and was named the Patriot League Rookie of the Year in 2011 and Second-Team All-Conference last year. Junior long stick midfielder Pat Kiernan is also a 2013 Preseason All-American and a 2013 Preseason All-Patriot League honoree.
This is the first meeting between the two schools, but UDM's second career game against a military academy with Detroit falling at Air Force, 13-6, in 2009. The contest also marks Detroit's second-ever night game as the Titans defeated Marist, 9-8, in the MAAC Semifinals at Canisius in 2011 in a game that began at 7 p.m.
Following the game, the Titans will play their third-straight road contest to open the 2013 campaign when they make the short trek to Robert Morris next Saturday, Feb. 23. Game time is set for Noon at Joe Walton Stadium in Moon Township, Pa.
