Game #29: Postseason Play Begins With #4 Titans Hosting #5 Wright State On Wednesday

GAMEDAY CENTRAL         Game Notes
HLN Preview With Coach Rademacher

DETROIT (3/12/13)  --
The “second season” of college basketball will begin for the Detroit women on Wednesday as the fourth seeded Titans meet the fifth-seeded Wright State Raiders in the quarterfinals of the Horizon League Championship. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m., at Dick Vitale Court in Calihan Hall.

Normal ticket pricing is in effect for the game with $6 for adults and $4 for children and seniors. The Titan Club will also be open to all members looking to see the Titans start their run to a possible postseason berth.

The game will be broadcast live on the Horizon League Network with Dan York calling all of the action. There will also be live stats available for the contest. Titan fans can follow every UDM game this season through the women's basketball GAMEDAY CENTRAL page located on the Titans Athletic Website that will keep fans one click away from all the action. This page will feature links for live stats (audio and video when applicable) as well as links for all the latest info while also making it easy to find the Titans on social media and to purchase photos and game tickets.

Detroit is 16-12 on the season and 9-7 in the Horizon League, posting back-to-back winning seasons for the first time since 2001 (17-12) and 2002 (16-14). UDM finished the regular season leading the league in scoring at 70.2 ppg., while ranking second in field-goal percentage (44.4%) and third in scoring defense (64.1).

The Titans swept the season series with Wright State winning 86-76 on the Raiders home court back in January and then tallying a 73-66 victory in Calihan Hall in mid-February. Sophomore Shareta Brown – a first team All-HL selection – averaged 23 points and 14.5 rebounds in both games against the Raiders, while senior Yar Shayok averaged 12 points and 12 rebounds. The game is also a rematch of last year's HL semifinals, where red, white and blue bested WSU, 78-70, to advance to the title game.

Wright State has won two of its last three after a six-game losing streak as the Raiders enter the tournament with a 12-17 record, 6-10 in the HL. The Raiders averaged 65.1 points - sixth in the conference - but let up 71.7 - eighth in the league.

WSU is led by All-Horizon League second team selection in sophomore Kim Demmings, who finished the regular season fourth in the league in scoring at 19.7 ppg., and tops in the conference with 4.5 assists per game. Ivory James - a HL All-Newcomer selection - is second on the team in scoring at 11.5 ppg., while KC Elkins is tallying 10.8 points, 4.2 rebounds and 3.5 assists per game.

A Titan win would move them into the Horizon League semifinals for the 14th time in school history. They would meet the winner of the #1 Green Bay and #8 Valparaiso match-up. If the Phoenix win, the game will be in Green Bay, but if the Crusaders win, then the game could be at #2 Youngstown State, #3 Loyola or even in Calihan Hall. In the women's HL Championship, the highest remaining seed after the quarterfinals host the semifinals and the title game.

THE DETROIT-WRIGHT STATE SERIES
The Titans swept both games from Wright State this year and lead the all-time series, 24-18. After dropping six in a row between 2007-09, UDM has won six of the last nine, including three straight and four of that last five games.
UDM is also 12-8 at home against WSU with two-straight victories.

HL POSTSEASON HISTORY
Detroit has two Horizon League championships to its credit. The Titans captured the 1987 title with a 21-6 record and a 10-2 mark in MCC play, as there was no tournament held.

UDM's other championship came with current head coach Autumn Rademacher leading the way in 1997 as Detroit defeated Wright State, Milwaukee and Green Bay - in Green Bay - to raise the banner and advance to its only NCAA Tournament.

For her efforts, Rademacher was named to the All-Tournament team.

The Titans have also finished runner-up five times (1999, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2012) with each loss in the championship game to the Phoenix.

ALL-TIME TOURNAMENT RECORD
The Titans are 23-21 all-time in the Horizon League postseason tournament, including an 0-1 record as the No. 4 seed.

The only other time Detroit was a No. 4 seed was in 1989 when the Titans dropped a 78-75 decision to Loyola in the semifinals.

POSTSEASON IN CALIHAN HALL
Detroit is 5-1 all-time at home in the conference tournament and has won its last five in the Motor City.

UDM has won a home playoff game in each of head coach Autumn Rademacher's four years and its other win was over Loyola in 2004.

The lone loss was to Wright State, 82-65, in 2000.

IN THE QUARTER'S
The Titans are 10-5 in the quarterfinals of the conference championship and have won their last six when the quarterfinals have been the opening game of the tournament.

The last quarterfinals loss UDM suffered was to Butler in 2011 after the Titans dispatched Valparaiso in the opening round game.

LOOKING TO GET BACK TO THE FINALS
Detroit made its sixth trip to the title game and the first under head coach Autumn Rademacher last year and will look to try and get back to the championship.

The last time UDM made back-to-back appearances in the Horizon League championship was when they went to three straight from 2002-2004, falling to Green Bay in each of those games.

LUCKY 1ST?
UDM has won at least one conference tournament game in four straight years, all under head coach Autumn Rademacher.

The Titans defeated Loyola in 2009 and 2010, Valparaiso in 2011 and Cleveland State last season - all at home.

TOURNAMENT RECORDS
Detroit has seen players net 20 or more points 14 times in the Horizon League Tournament, with the Titan record set at 31 by Heather Longar against Evansville in 1992.

Sophomore Shareta Brown nearly broke that with 30 against Wright State in last year's Horizon League Semifinals win, and also had 22 in the championship loss to Green Bay.

A Titan has recorded 12 or more rebounds eight times, with the school mark held by India Bruster with 19 at Green Bay in 2007.

UDM has also seen seven players collect a double-double with current Titan Yar Shayok the last to do it with 19 points and 11 boards against Butler in 2010.

MEETING THE RAIDERS
The Titans and Raiders have met four times in the Horizon League Championship with each team coming away with two victories.

As a No. 2 seed, Detroit raced past No. 3 WSU, 78-70, last year in the semifinals.

As a No. 1 seed, UDM downed eighth-seeded Wright State, 86-47, in the 1997 quarterfinals. The +39 margin in that contest is still the biggest victory in school history in the conference tournament.

The two losses came in 2000 (82-65) and in 2005 (76-66).

BROWN, REYNOLDS & SHAYOK EARN HORIZON LEAGUE HONORS
Senior Yar Shayok was named the Horizon League Sixth Player of the Year, sophomore Shareta Brown was tabbed All-HL First Team and freshman Rosanna Reynolds was selected to the All-Newcomer squad as the conference announced its women's basketball postseason awards on Monday.

In addition to being named the Sixth Player of the Year for the second-straight season, Shayok was also voted to the HL All-Defensive Team for the second time in her career (2011).

Shayok is third on the team in scoring (9.1) and second on the squad and fifth in the HL in rebounding (8.6).  She started 16 of the 28 games she appeared in, but came off the bench for most of conference play starting just four. She had seven double-doubles on the year, with four coming off the bench. She is also sixth in the conference in blocks (0.9) with her 24 total tied for the third most in the league, while her 25 steals is second on the team.

Brown was also named All-Horizon League First Team for the second-straight year and is only the fourth Titan in school history to receive two All-Conference first team honors. She tops the Titans and is third in the HL and 17th in the nation in scoring at 20.3 ppg., while ranking first in the conference and sixth in the nation in field-goal percentage (57.9%). She is also third in the conference in rebounding at 9.3 per night, while her 4.1 offensive rebounds per game leads the league. She has four 30-point efforts on the year, 11 20-point performances, 25 double-digit scoring outings, and 13 double-doubles.

Reynolds had a steady rookie season in taking over the point guard duties for Detroit and is fourth in the HL with 4.2 assists per game and fifth in assist-to-turnover ratio (1.7), top 100 in the country in both categories. She has 18 games on the year with four or more assists, including a season-high nine against Cleveland State, and has been in double digits in scoring nine times with a career-high 20 at Wright State. She also hardly ever came off the court averaging a team-best 35.2 minutes per game, sixth in the league.

BROWN TOP 10 IN THE NATION
In the latest NCAA stats, released on Monday, sophomore Shareta Brown continues to be among the nation's leaders in scoring and field-goal percentage.

Brown is currently third in field-goal percentage hitting 57.9%. She is also 16th in the nation in scoring at 20.3 ppg., and 69th with 9.3 rebounds per game.

The only Titan to ever lead the nation in a statistical category was Brigid Mulroy back in 2010 as she was first in three-point field-goal percentage (50.5%).

Brown was fifth in the NCAA in field-goal percentage (55.9%) last season.

CAN SHE KEEP IT AT 20?
Sophomore Shareta Brown is currently averaging 20.3 points per game and if she were to finish averaging in the 20's, she would be just the second Titan to do that.

Right now, Cassandra Pack is the only player in school history to average 20 in a year as she tallied 22.2 ppg., in 1986-87.

BACK-TO-BACK WINNING SEASONS
Detroit is 16-12 on the year and has clinched its second straight winning season.

The Titans posted their first 20-win season since 1997 last year and now have back-to-back winning seasons for the first time since 2001 (17-12) and 2002 (16-14).

Under Coach Rademacher, UDM has had two winning seasons in the last three years after having just one in its previous seven.

OFFENSE WINS GAMES, DEFENSE WINS CHAMPIONSHIPS
Detroit is currently third in the Horizon League allowing 64.1 ppg., and second holding opponents to just 38.5% shooting.

Detroit has held opponents under 60 points 12 times this year, including under 50 on three occasions.

UDM held Youngstown State to 28.3% shooting (15-of-53) in a 62-48 win at home and that came after allowing a season-low 40 points, 22.8% shooting and just 13 field goals against Milwaukee on Mar. 2.

The 40 points allowed was the fewest to a Division I squad since the Titans defeated Loyola, 49-34, back in 2005. In 2010, Detroit crushed NAIA-member Marygrove, 68-27.

The 13 field goals and 22.8% were also the lowest since holding Cleveland State to 23.6% (13-of-55) in a 79-43 victory in last year's HL Quarterfinals.

A RUDE HOST
UDM is 11-1 at home this season - averaging 77.8 ppg - with a +19.3 scoring margin.

Detroit has also won 11 games at Calihan Hall for the second-straight season, a number that is tied for the third most wins at home in school history behind three 12-win campaigns and a perfect 13-0 mark during the 1986-87 season.

MORE ON CALIHAN MAGIC
Over a longer stretch of time, the Titans have posted a 23-4 ledger in their last 27 home games dating back to the 2010-11 campaign, as well as 38-12 in their last 50 home games.

UDM is also 46-23 in Calihan Hall since head coach Autumn Rademacher returned to her alma mater in 2008.

In their 35-year history, the Titans have enjoyed a 274-144 (.634) home court record.

HEATING UP
After being held to just eight points against Green Bay, sophomore Shareta Brown has come back with three straight double-doubles to end the regular season.

She now has 13 double-doubles on the year and 25 in her career.

In the last three games, she is averaging 16.3 ppg., and 11.0 rpg., while shooting 17-of-25 (68.0%) from the field.

THE DEEP ASSASSIN
Junior Senee Shearer has seen 42 of her 52 field goals on the year come from behind the three-point line (80.7%), with four games already that have seen her nail five triples in a game. Shearer has played in just 13 games after returning from a torn ACL suffered in last year's Horizon League Championship.

In her career, 123 of her 190 field goals have been 3-pointers (64.7%) with 12 career games of four or more and seven games of at least five treys, with her career high set at six last year at home against Youngstown State.

She is currently second on the team in scoring with 12.7 ppg.

FAMBRO'S GOT GAME
Senior Demeisha Fambro was in double figures for the 15th time this season after leading Detroit with 17 at Valparaiso.

Against Green Bay on Feb. 28, she scored just nine points, but tied her career high with five assists and four steals.

Earlier this year, she reached double figures in a career-best six-straight games, which included a season-high 20 points against UIC.

In her last 13 games, she is tallying 12.5 ppg., and is averaging 11.0 points - third on the team and 19th in the HL - on the season.

She also has 99 career 3-pointers good for 11th place in Titan history and just eight away from the 10th spot.

YAR ETCHES HER NAME IN SCHOOL RECORD BOOK
Yar Shayok is currently second in school history with 1,094 rebounds trailing only Titan Hall-of-Famer Cheryl Williams (1,368).

Shayok is now just the second Titan to post 1,000 points and rebounds in their career behind only Williams.

She is currently second on the team and fifth in the Horizon League in rebounding (8.6), which includes 12 double-digit efforts.

She tied her career high with 17 rebounds against Milwaukee on Mar. 2, and had 15 against Lourdes and 14 versus Canisius.

The 17 caroms versus the Panthers marked the 49th time in her career that she has pulled down at least 10 boards in a game.

In her career, she is averaging 8.7 rebounds and has 49 games with double-digit rebounds, including 17 as a redshirt freshman and 16 as a sophomore. She pulled down 10.2 rpg., as a sophomore, a number that ranks fourth among the single-season records at UDM.
