DETROIT (4/19/13) - The Detroit women's tennis team will face Horizon League opponents Green Bay and Milwaukee this weekend. The Titans will play Green Bay on Friday at 6:00 p.m. and then Milwaukee on Saturday at 6:00 p.m. Both matches are scheduled to take place at the Franklin Athletic Club but if weather permits they can be played at the Titan Tennis Courts on the UDM campus.
The Titans
Detroit is riding a four-match win streak that includes an historic win over UIC to snap its 146-match conference win streak last Saturday. UDM also blanked IUPUI and Valparaiso, 7-0, over the three-match weekend.
Elena Strakhova clinched the victory at UIC with a win at sixth singles. She now has nine wins on the year with three coming in HL play. Both Valery Kulikovskaya and
Irina Slizovskaya have 10 wins on the season and are 4-1 in HL action. Slizovskaya has a win at both first and second singles and has added four wins at both third and fourth singles. Kulikovskaya has a 4-2 mark at fourth singles and a 6-1 record at fifth singles.
The Titans have clinched a spot in the Horizon League Championships and can be as high as the first seed or as low as sixth seed. If Detroit wins the remainder of its games it can be as high as first, but if UDM loses both of its remaining two games it will be the fifth seed if Wright State loses or sixth if Wright State wins.
Green Bay
The Phoenix enter the match with a 1-20 record overall and a 1-5 mark in conference. The only win on the year came against Valparaiso, 7-0, on March 30. Maria Anderson leads the team with five wins and two conference victories, all coming at third singles. Stephanie Londre has four wins at second singles and Rebecca Nelson has four wins at fourth singles.
In doubles play, Londre and Rachael Menos lead the team with three wins with one win coming in conference action. Nelson has teamed with Amanda Timm for a pair of wins at first doubles with a victory in HL play.
Milwaukee
The Panthers have won their previous three matches that include victories over Youngstown State and Wright State. UWM is now 12-8 (4-2 HL) on the year and this is its final match before the Horizon League Championships.
Four players have four conference victories on the year, with Maddy Soule leading the way with a 4-1 record at first singles. Dana Shannon has 13 wins on the year and a 4-2 mark in conference play with a pair of wins at first singles.
In doubles play, Christina Colarossi and Soule are 17-2 at first doubles this year with a 5-1 record in the Horizon League. Dana Shannon and Kelly Fritz have a 12-6 record at second doubles with a 4-1 mark in HL play.
Horizon League Championships
The Horizon League Championships will take place in Indianapolis and will begin on Friday, April 26 and continue until April 28.
