Watch The Complete NLL Draft (Houtby Drafted at 1:26:26 mark)
TORONTO (9/16/2013) -- Make it two straight years that a Titan has been drafted to play professional lacrosse as former University of Detroit Mercy standout and three-time MAAC LSM of the Year
Jordan Houtby was drafted by the Minnesota Swarm in the fourth round (29th overall) of the National Lacrosse League (NLL) draft on Monday night. The NLL's annual draft was held at the Toronto Rock Athletic Centre (TRAC) in Oakville, Ontario.
"I am pretty excited to get to tryouts and hopefully crack that roster," said Houtby during an interview at the NLL draft. "I was hoping to go earlier, but I am excited to get picked."
Houtby follows Joel Matthews – a childhood friend from St. Catharines, Ont. – as the second Titan to get drafted professionally as Matthews was picked by the Buffalo Bandits in the fourth round (31st overall) in 2012.
The 2013 UDM graduate left the Titan program with a number of awards and accolades and is currently the all-time NCAA leader in caused turnovers with 158. He led a defense that finished among the top three in the nation in caused turnovers in all four of his years – including first in 2011 and 2012 – and also posted 289 career ground balls and 14 points on nine goals and five assists.
He was tabbed the outright MAAC LSM of the Year as a sophomore and junior and was Co-LSM of the Year as a senior, helping Detroit to its' first-ever MAAC Championship and a trip to the NCAA Tournament this past season.
Outside of the Motor City, he represented Team Canada In the 'Duel In Denver' against Team USA in September of 2012 and also made a name for himself while playing with the Brooklin Redmen of the Major Series Lacrosse League (MSL) this past summer and the Ontario Junior A Lacrosse League in previous years. He was also selected as Detroit's first USILA Scholar All-American and earned a spot on the South squad in the USILA North-South College All-Star Game – the first Titan to ever appear in the contest.
Houtby quickly began to assert himself upon arriving in Detroit earning the Titan Defensive Player of the Year as a freshman. He led the team – and the MAAC - with 32 caused turnovers and was second with 53 ground balls, while his 32 caused turnovers led the team. His total caused turnover mark was the highest for any freshmen in the country and he finished sixth in the nation in caused TO's per game (2.13).
As a sophomore, he stepped up his game and was named Second Team All-MAAC, MAAC All-Tournament, and Team MVP, setting career highs in every statistic. He was second in the nation with 3.25 caused turnovers per game and 11th in ground balls picking up 6.06. His 97 GB's that year were also second in the MAAC, and he found the back of the net four times. He recorded a sensational game in the MAAC Championship semifinals victory over Marist scoring two goals – including the game winner breaking an 8-8 game in the fourth.
As a junior, he was second in the nation for the second-straight year with 2.53 caused turnovers per game and led the MAAC with 39 caused turnovers, while his 4.4 ground balls per game was fourth in the conference and 33rd in the nation. Just this past season, he topped the team with 73 ground balls – fourth in the MAAC and first among non-faceoff specialists – and was second tallying 35 caused turnovers, with his 2.33 mark sixth in the nation. In his final game at the collegiate level against nationally-ranked Notre Dame on the road in the NCAA Tournament, he recorded a game-high three caused turnovers and nine ground balls.
He graduated from UDM this past May with a 3.22 GPA in business with a concentration in marketing and that was after appearing in 61 games wearing the red, white and blue – tying him for the most in program history.
