Titans Cage Panthers In Milwaukee, 73-54

– Juwan Howard Jr. recorded his third-straight 20 point performance with a game-high 24 points as the University of Detroit Mercy men's basketball team caged the Milwaukee Panthers, 73-54, Friday night at U.S. Cellular Arena in Horizon League action. The win snapped a four game losing skid for the Titans.

Howard finished 11-of-23 from the field and 2-of-5 from the deep, while grabbing eight rebounds to go along with two assists, one blocked shot and one steal. Freshman guards Jarod Williams and Matthew Grant both started for Detroit and finished in 16 and 12 points, respectively, while senior co-captain Evan Bruinsma added seven points to go along with a game-high 10 rebounds. The 16 points from Williams was a new career-high.

Detroit (9-12, 2-4 HL) opened the game with an early 8-2 run, including a pair off layups from Bruinsma, forcing the Panthers to call timeout. Following the stoppage of play Milwaukee responded with a 10-3 run to take a 12-11 lead - its only lead of the game - with 13:09 left, before Detroit responded by closing the half with a 27-16 run which included three-straight trifectas from Howard, Williams and Anton Wilson, to take a 38-28 lead into the locker room. Howard led all scorers with nine points, while Williams added eight and Wilson pitched in six.

Milwaukee (13-9, 3-5 HL) started the second stanza with a 6-0 run to trim the Titans lead to 38-34 forcing head coach Ray McCallum to call a timeout with 16:45 left on the clock. Following the timeout both teams swapped a pair of 4-0 runs as the Titans led 44-40 with 13:23 left, before Detroit erupted with a 27-10 run – including 10 straight points from Howard - over the next 10 minutes to build its largest lead of the game 71-50 with two minutes left.

Detroit shot 40.3 percent (25-of-62) overall and 28.6 percent (4-14)from downtown, while Milwaukee finished shooting 31 percent (18-of-58) overall, including 19 percent (4-21) from beyond the arc. The Titans won the battle on the boards 46-40 and forced 18 turnovers with 10 steals, which resulted in 17 points for the Titans.

Jordan Aaron and Steve McWhorter led Milwaukee with nine points apiece, while Malcolm Moore added eight and Austin Arians added seven.

Detroit will conclude its three-game road swing when the Titans visit Green Bay on Sunday, Jan. 26. The game is slated to tip-off at 2:00 p.m. ET at the Resch Center and will be carried live on 97.1 The Ticket's webstream with Dan Leach the voice of Titan Basketball.

GAME NOTES: Milwaukee leads the all-time series 21-20, but Detroit has won the last four meetings … Juwan Howard Jr. has scored 79 points over the last three games and is averaging 26.3 per game … Juwan Howard, Jr. has also scored in double figures 19 time this season … Matthew Grant and Jarod Williams are the first freshman guards to start a game for the Titans since Ray McCallum and Jason Calliste did in 2010.
