Titans Visit Cleveland State on Wednesday

– The University of Detroit Mercy men's basketball team will continue Horizon League play when the Titans visit Cleveland State on Wednesday, Jan. 8. The game is scheduled to begin at 7:00 p.m. at the Wolstein Center and will be live on CBS Sports Radio 1270 AM with Dan Leach the voice of Titan Basketball.

LAST OUTING
Senior co-captain Evan Bruinsma had 17 points and sophomore guard Anton Wilson added 12, including some timely three-pointers as Detroit held off Wright State, 58-53, Saturday afternoon in its Horizon League opener at Calihan Hall.

After trailing 31-29 at the half Wright State (9-8, 1-1) answered back to build a 44-38 lead with 9:24 left in regulation, before the Titans closed the game with a 20-9 run to record their fourth-straight win at home.

Bruinsma led Detroit (8-8, 1-0) with a game-high 17 points, including 12 in the second half,  to go along with nine rebounds while Wilson finished with 12 points on  3-of-4 from shooting downtown. Junior forward Juwan Howard Jr. finished with nine points, five rebounds, four assists and three steals, while Carlton Brundidge added eight points and Jarod Williams pitched in seven. Senior center Ugochukwu Njoku grabbed a game and career-high 11 rebounds.

Detroit shot 36.4 percent (16-of-44) overall, while holding Wright State to 35.8 percent (19-of-53). The Titans finished 6-of-14 from downtown, while the Raiders finished 4-of-22 from beyond the arc. Detroit also forced 13 turnovers, with six steals and five blocked shots.

ABOUT THE VIKINGS
Cleveland State (9-7, 1-1 HL) became the first road team to win a Horizon League game this season as Anton Grady posted his second straight double-double and Trey Lewis scored 17 points as the Vikings won at Milwaukee, 77-49, on Saturday night in U.S. Cellular Arena.

Grady finished with a season-high tying 19 points and 11 rebounds, hitting 8-of-9 from the field. He added two steals. It was his third double-double this year and seventh of his career.

CSU scorched the nets at a 58-percent clip (29-50), including 8-of-15 (.533) from downtown.

SERIES WITH CLEVELAND STATE
This will be the 56th meeting between Detroit and Cleveland State, with the Titans leading the all-time series 37-18. Both teams split in the regular season last year, with the Vikings winning the first matchup, 74-62, at the Wolstein Center, before Detroit took the second meeting, 92-62, at home.

WILLIAMS NAMED HL FRESHMAN OF THE WEEK
Freshman guard Jarod Williams has been named the Horizon League Freshman of the Week following strong performances against Bethune-Cookman and Wright State. Williams is the second Titan to win this award this season.

Williams notched 10 points and five rebounds in the Titans' non-conference win over Bethune-Cookman, before following that up with seven points, three assists and two blocked shots against Wright State. Williams leads Detroit with 40 assists on the year, and is averaging 8.1 points per game.

Detroit will continue Horizon League play when the Titans host Oakland on Saturday, Jan. 11, during Homecoming. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. at Calihan Hall, following the women's game versus the Grizzlies at 2 p.m. The men's game will also be live on 97.1 The Ticket webstream with Dan Leach the voice of Titan Basketball.
