Ring Ceremony On HLN Detroit
DETROIT (1/31/2014) -- It was a special night in historic Calihan Hall as the University of Detroit Mercy men's lacrosse team raised its 2013 MAAC Championship banner and received its championship rings on Friday night during halftime of the men's basketball game.
Members of last year's squad were back along with family and friends as they gathered for a pre-game reception in the Titan Club.
At halftime, the Titans took center stage with the banner raising and the presentation of the MAAC Championship rings.
The 2013 season saw the fifth-year program rise to the top to win its first-ever MAAC Championship and advance to its first NCAA Championship. For Detroit, making the NCAA Tournament in its fifth year tied an NCAA record for the quickest team ever to reach the event in Division I.
Not only were the Titans champions on the field, but also off as UDM led the MAAC with 18 All-Academic selections and had 34 members on the Athletic Director's Honor Roll.
The Titans needed to win its final regular season game just to get into the MAAC playoffs and they did just that, taking care of Canisius, 13-7, at Titan Field to earn the No. 4 seed.
From there, Detroit took off upsetting top-seeded Marist, 7-6, as
A.J. Levell stood tall making 17 saves, while
Mike Birney netted three goals, including the game winner with 1:25 left in the contest.
It was then onto the championship where UDM trailed No. 2 Siena, 9-4, in the third period when the Titans erupted for five-straight goals to tie it up. Detroit was then down 10-9 late in the fourth when
Alex Maini knotted it up it and the game went into overtime when Birney once again had the game winner as his career-high fifth goal sent Detroit dancing, 11-10.
The Titans then made headlines in the lacrosse world as they traveled to Notre Dame and gave the No. 2 Fighting Irish all they could handle in a 9-7 thrilling affair in the first round of the NCAA Championship.
Birney was recognized as the MAAC's Most Outstanding Player in the MAAC Championship with eight goals that weekend.
Jamie Hebden,
Jordan Houtby and Levell were also named All-Tournament.
Houtby was named the Co-MAAC LSM of the Year for the third-straight season and was also honored as Detroit's First USILA Scholar All-American.
Hebden was selected All-MAAC First Team on defense, while Levell, Maini and Birney were tabbed Second Team All-MAAC. In addition, freshmen
Paul Bitetti,
Andy Hebden,
Damien Hicks and
Nick Melucci, were named to the All-Rookie Team.
The Titans will begin the 2014 regular season with two indoor home games played at Ultimate Soccer Arenas in Pontiac as Detroit hosts Mercer on Feb. 16 (1:00 p.m.) and Michigan on Feb. 19 (7:00 p.m.). For season and regular season tickets,
