HORIZON LEAGUE SEEDING
Detroit enters its last game of the regular season in eighth place, but with a win over first-place Green Bay the Titans could skyrocket themselves all the way up to the fifth seed in the Horizon League Tournament.
Currently Green Bay (13-2) and Cleveland State (11-4) have clinched the top two seeds, while Wright State (9-6) and Valparaiso (9-6) are tied for third. Milwaukee (7-9) is currently fifth, while Oakland (6-9), Youngstown State (6-9) and Detroit (6-9) are all tied for sixth.
With a Detroit win over Green Bay and a Youngstown State win over Oakland on Saturday the Titans will have the same record as Milwaukee and Youngstown State, but will own the tie breaker over both teams to clinch the fifth seed and host a first round game in the HL Tournament on Tuesday. If Detroit and Oakland both win on Saturday then Milwaukee will stay at fifth, while the Grizzlies will take sixth and the Titans seventh. If Detroit were to lose on Saturday then the Titans would finish eighth.
LAST OUTING
Everyone that played scored for the Titans, but one last Milwaukee spurt was the difference as the University of Detroit Mercy men's basketball team was downed by the Panthers, 68-62, on Thursday night at historic Calihan Hall.
The loss dropped Detroit (13-17) to 6-9 in the Horizon League and improved Milwaukee (17-13) to 7-9, as a home playoff game is still an option if UDM can pull out a win on Saturday against Green Bay and get some help from others.
Freshman
Jarod Williams led Detroit with 12 points in just 20 minutes of action. Senior
Evan Bruinsma had 10 points, five rebounds and three assists and junior
Juwan Howard Jr. tallied nine points and had a career-high four steals.
The game was tied six times in the last eight minutes of action as Detroit caught up from a one time 12-point first-half deficit. Milwaukee was up, 49-44, with 8:53 remaining when Howard Jr. scored five-straight points, the last three courtesy of a trifecta.
Milwaukee ended up shooting 55.3% (26-of-47) from the field and won the battle of the glass, 34-28. Detroit ended up forcing 17 turnovers and had a 19-14 edge on points off turnovers.
Carlton Brundidge finished with eight points and three rebounds and freshman
Matthew Grant netted seven points and handed out two assists.
ABOUT THE PHOENIX
Alec Brown and Keifer Sykes combined for 21 points in the second half as Green Bay rallied from 15 down to defeat Oakland 71-63 on Thursday night and claim the outright Horizon League championship.
Brown finished with 18 points - 10 in the first half - and Sykes and Jordan Fouse had 16 each. Alfonzo McKinnie added 10 for the Phoenix (23-5, 13-2 Horizon), who are now two games ahead of Cleveland State with one game remaining.
Oakland (11-19, 6-9 Horizon) was ahead 46-31 early in the second half before the Phoenix went to work, shooting 65.4 percent in the half. Green Bay went ahead for good on a Sykes basket with 10:27 left and led by as many as 10 points. Green Bay outscored Oakland 40-19 in the half.
SERIES WITH GREEN BAY
This will be the 47th meeting between Detroit and Green Bay, with the Titans leading the all-time series 25-21. Green Bay won the first meeting this year 62-52 at the Resch Center in Green Bay. Both teams split their series last year with Detroit winning at home 84-76.
1 FOR 100
Detroit Titans head coach
Ray McCallum enters Saturday's game just one win shy of becoming the fourth head coach in Titans history to record 100 or more for #DetroitsCollegeTeam.
Titan legend Bob Calihan leads the way with 306 wins while, Perry Watson (261) and Lloyd Brazil (185) are second and third, respectively. Calihan coached at Detroit for 21 years, while Brazil ran the show for 16 seasons and Watson 15. McCallum is currently in his sixth campaign with Detroit.
FRESHMAN BACKCOURT
The Titans have started freshman guards
Matthew Grant and
Jarod Williams in the backcourt together over the last four games, making the pair the first freshmen guards to start for Detroit since
Ray McCallum and
Jason Calliste did in 2010. The only difference being that both Grant and Williams are true freshmen, while in 2010 Calliste was a redshirt freshman. The last time two true freshmen started in the Titan backcourt together dates back to the 1980-81 season when Audie Matthews and Mark Moore started 13 games together.
CLEANING THE GLASS
Entering Saturday's game the Titans lead the Horizon League in offensive rebounds with 12.7 per game and overall with 37.1 per game. Senior co-captain
Evan Bruinsma leads the team and ranks second in the League with 7.8 boards per game, while
Ugochukwu Njoku (6.0) and
Juwan Howard Jr. (5.4) rank eighth and 11th.
