Match ResultsPhoto GalleryPLEASE NOTE SCHEDULE UPDATE: The Titans will play Valparaiso on Saturday, April 12 at 6:00 p.m. at the Franklin Athletic Club in Southfield, MichiganDETROIT (4/11/2014) -- A match at No. 5 singles ending up deciding the victor as the University of Detroit Mercy women's tennis team fell to the UIC Flames Friday afternoon at the Titan Tennis Courts at the James K. Campbell Complex on the campus of UDM.
It was the first match played outdoors at home this year for the Titans (8-7, 3-3 Horizon League) and the crowd attempted to rally the troops en route to a big victory over UIC (7-10, 4-1 HL).
UDM came out roaring with a win at No. 1 doubles from freshman
Viktoria Laskutova and sophomore
Nino Sujashvili as the duo won 8-5. Sophomore
Valeryia Kulikovskaya and freshman
Anna Davydova clinched the doubles point for Detroit with an 8-5 win.
The singles matches started with a straight set win for Kulikovskaya at No. 3, 6-0, 6-3 and senior
Elena Strakhova followed suite with a 6-3, 6-1 win at No. 6 singles to put the Titans within a point of winning the match and up 3-0.
The Flames fired back with wins at No. 1 singles, No. 4 singles, and No. 2 singles pushing Detroit to a final and deciding match at No. 5 singles with senior
Julia Fernandes battling it out with Keti Mebuke of UIC.
Mebuke claimed the first set 6-2 before Fernandes clawed back with a 7-6 (0) win in the second set to force a third and final set. Back-and-forth the two went battling it out point-after-point and UIC cheering on Mebuke and the Titan faithful backing Fernandes at every turn. Mebuke held on for the 7-5 victory and a heartbreaking loss for Detroit.
The Titans will look ahead to its next match against Valparaiso on Saturday at 6:00 p.m. that will be played at the Franklin Athletic Club.
