Senior CLASS Award Official Release
OVERLAND PARK, Kan. (5/24/2014) -- The end of the year accolades keep rolling in as 2014 graduate
Troy Dennis of the University of Detroit Mercy men's lacrosse team earned Senior CLASS Award First Team All-American on Saturday.
The first and second teams were announced today along with the 2014 Senior CLASS Award® winner in Princeton's All-American midfielder Tom Schreiber.
An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School®, the Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities.
To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence – community, classroom, character and competition.
The 10 finalists were chosen by national media from the list of 20 candidates announced in February. Nationwide fan voting began in early April and between fan voting and media and Division I head coaches' votes, the first and second teams were formed.
Dennis – who will play one final collegiate game as a member of the South Team in the USILA North-South College All-Star Game on championship Monday – appeared in 58 games as a Titan, helping Detroit win its' first-ever MAAC Championship and advance to the program's first NCAA Tournament in 2013 as well as a MAAC Championship runner-up effort in 2011.
He is a two-year member of the MAAC Academic Honor Roll and the MAAC All-Academic Team and a four-time recipient of the University of Detroit Mercy Athletic Director's Honor Roll. He was presented with the the Reverend Nobert Heutter Award as a senior, presented to a student-athlete who has demonstrated leadership, dedication, cooperation with teammates and coaches, pride in team achievements, determination to excel, and graciousness in victory or defeat.
Dennis was a UDM Presidential Ambassador since his junior year and was on the Student Athletic Advisory Committee (SAAC) for three years. In the fall of 2013, his hard work and dedication in training saw him featured on the cover of Inside Lacrosse Magazine in its' November issue of "Gym Rats".
His community service involvement was also impressive as he worked with Baldwin's (NY) Summer Program Camp as a supervisor in 2012 and 2013, was a Detroit Arts Beats and Eats Festival Volunteer in 2013 and 2014 and a Larry Bosciano Children Lacrosse Clinic Volunteer since 2006 along with a Campus Kitchens Volunteer in 2011 and 2012 just to name a few.
