NASHVILLE, Tenn. (12/2/2015) -- The University of Detroit Mercy men's basketball team made 11 from long distance, but it was No. 16/13 Vanderbilt who had the hot hand all game long as the Titans fell, 102-52, on the road on Wednesday night at Memorial Gym.
Detroit had 16 field goals in the game with 11 coming from downtown. Senior
Anton Wilson had 14 points to lead Detroit. Junior
Jarod Williams netted a season-high 12, while junior
Chris Jenkins and freshman
Josh McFolley had 11 apiece.
The Titans (2-3) scored the first five points of the game as Williams hit two free throws and Jenkins nailed a trifecta. Vanderbilt (6-1) then scored five straight before McFolley gave the Titans the lead back with a jumper at the 14:41 mark.
The Commodores took off from there with a 12-0 run that was broken by a pair of Wilson free throws. He would later hit a triple to make it a 23-12 deficit, but Vanderbilt was just too hot extending its lead and taking a 47-20 halftime advantage.
In the second half, the Titan offense came mostly from behind the arc as the red, white and blue connected on 7-of-14 3-pointers, but Vanderbilt never let up.
Freshman
Gerald Blackshear pulled down a team-high six rebounds, while Williams, senior
Carlton Brundidge and sophomore
Jaleel Hogan each had five boards. Jenkins also finished with a game and career-high four steals.
The Commodores shot 57.4 percent from the field, including 12-of-26 from long range.
The Titans will now get ready for a four-game homestand starting this Saturday when defending CAA champion Northeastern visits Calihan Hall. The game is part of a Titan doubleheader as the women host Salem International at Noon with the men's contest tipping off at 3:00 p.m.
