Game Notes vs. Robert Morris

DETROIT (2/18/2015) --
The weather outside might be cold, but indoors is where the action will take place as the University of Detroit Mercy men's lacrosse team welcomes mid-west rival Robert Morris on Saturday, Feb. 21.

Game time is set for 1:00 p.m., and will be played indoors at Ultimate Soccer Arenas in Pontiac, the indoor home of the red, white and blue. Tickets to the game start at $10, but a number of ticket packages are available for the season. To purchase tickets and for more information, click here.

The Gameday Central page also carries all the information on each opponent from who is leading the all-time series to who won the last game.

Detroit is 1-1 on the year after suffering a road loss at Michigan last week. UDM started the season with a 9-8 win over Ohio State in front of 1,362 screaming fans at Ultimate Soccer Arenas and is now 4-3 all-time at the facility.

The game could be a record setter as senior Shayne Adams is just three points away from becoming the all-time points leader in Titan history. He currently has 144 in 50 career games and is already the all-time goals leader with 123.

Freshman Mark Anstead had two assists and a goal last week and became the second Titan in as many weeks to earn the MAAC's Rookie of the Week award.

Sophomore Jason Weber has 31 saves through two games in net and junior Paul Bitteti has posted a pair of caused turnovers in each of the first two games.

Robert Morris is 0-2 on the season after a season-opening 10-6 loss at Ohio State and a 13-10 setback at home against Bellarmine last week. RMU has lost five in a row dating back to last season, but is 5-0 all-time against the Titans.

THE OPENING FACEOFF
The Detroit Titans will look to rebound from last week's setback as UDM returns to its home indoor facility to face the Robert Morris Colonials on Saturday at Ultimate Soccer Arenas in Pontiac.

AGAINST THE NEC
The Titans are 2-9 all-time against current teams in the Northeast Conference. UDM has played Robert Morris the most at 0-5, while tallying a 2-0 mark versus Wagner, 0-3 against Mount St. Mary's and 0-1 against Bryant.

ABOUT ROBERT MORRIS
Robert Morris is coming off a 5-9 year in 2014 and has dropped its first two this season with losses at Ohio State (10-6) and against Bellarmine (13-10).

The team was picked to finish fifth of seven in the NEC's preseason poll. The Colonials return their top-scoring junior trio of Eric Rankel - All-NEC First Team last year - Luke Laszkiewicz, and James Rahe. The three combined to score 64 goals and dish out 37 assists in 2014, contributing to 50 percent of the team's goal total.

Rahe currently leads the team with six points and four goals, while Laszkiewicz has three goals. Eric Wales tops the squad with four assists and also has five points and six other Colonials have scored on the season.

Chris Barney is the team's top faceoff man winning 14-of-45 (.311) with five ground balls, while Chase Rose has started both games in net and has posted an 11.50 goals against average and a .521 save percentage.

RMU has won all five meetings against Detroit with four of those taking place on the road. The lone home game was in 2011 when UDM was downed in overtime, 14-13.

LAST TIME VS. THE COLONIALS
Shayne Adams powered in five goals and the Titans had an early lead, but a second-half run by Robert Morris spelled doom as Detroit fell, 11-7, at Joe Walton Stadium last year.

Detroit saw Robert Morris get off to a strong start in its home opener as the Colonials took a 2-0 lead nearly five minutes into the game before the Titans got on the board as Maini located Adams for his first. After another RMU goal, Adams cut the deficit back to one as his Canadian counterpart Masterson found him and he delivered with just 10 seconds left in the opening period.

Masterson and Adams would get together again early in the second to tie it up and then Maini earned another assist as Adams' fourth-straight goal, this time with the man-up, put Detroit ahead, 4-3, at the 10:09 mark.

That is when the Colonials made their first run scoring four straight in a span of 1:20 as they jumped in front, 7-4, but a Maini goal and Adams' fifth of the first half would pull the red, white and blue within one at the break, 7-6.

The comeback stalled in the third as Robert Morris added three goals in the period and kept Detroit off the scoreboard until Maini – who broke the Titan all-time assist record on the play – hooked up with Brandon Beauregard for his third goal of the season to make it 10-7, but that was as close as UDM got.

PLAYING AT HOME
UDM is 13-12 at home on Titan Field in its history as well as 4-3 in home games played indoors at Ultimate Soccer Arenas in Pontiac.

ULTIMATE HISTORY
The Titans are 3-3 all-time in games played at Ultimate Soccer Arenas - the program's home indoor facility - after their season-opening 9-8 victory over Ohio State.

The red, white and blue will play three games in its indoor home in 2015, matching last year's high of three contests.

UDM defeated Mercer in 19-3 in 2011 and 11-10 last season as well as Michigan, 13-9, in 2012.

The three losses came to Bellarmine, 12-8, in 2010 and 2014 as well as 14-13 in overtime to Michigan last year.

ANOTHER GREAT CROWD
Detroit played its season opener in front of 1,363 fans at Ultimate Soccer Arenas marking the fourth time in school history that UDM has topped over 1,000 fans in a home game.

Last season, 1,909 fans came out to see the red, white and blue face Michigan at Ultimate Soccer Arenas. It is believed to be the largest crowd for any Olympic sport in Titan history.

The other two games with 1,000 or more was on Feb. 12, 2012, when 1,800 fans came to see the Titans take on Michigan, while on Feb. 6, 2010, 1,565 fans were in the house to watch Detroit battle Bellarmine.

BORN AND RAISED IN MICHIGAN
While the Titans do recruit nationally - witnessed by 11 states and two countries on their 46-man roster - there is no arguing that Detroit loves to keep players in their home state as 24 of UDM's 46 players (52.1%) hail from the Great Lakes State.

Canada with eight and New York with five follows next. Arizona, Florida, Indiana, Maryland, Minnesota, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Texas and Virginia all have one apiece playing for the Titans.

BRING ON THE YOUNGSTERS
You always feel more comfortable with experience, but it was the younger Titans who shined in the win over Ohio State.

Out of the eight goal scorers, three were true freshmen, led by Sean Birney who tallied two goals and an assist. Mark Anstead and Alec Gilhooly also recorded a goal and an assist.

Sophomore Brad Harris also had a goal and an assist and, of course, there was sophomore goalie Jason Weber who made 14 saves.

Anstead also came back last week to record three points on two assists and a goal at Michigan and is tied for the team lead with five points.

DÉJÀ VU, HARRIS GETS FIRST GOAL AGAINST OSU
That is right as a Titan named Harris scored his first collegiate goal against Ohio State as sophomore Brad Harris tallied the marker in the season opener.

Those might remember that his older brother Scott (2009-12) netted his first goal and the first goal in Titan history against Ohio State in 2009.

SHEVINS TAKING IT AWAY
Senior Chris Shevins is part of a strong senior backline and the upperclassman played a great game in registering a career-high three caused turnovers with a pair of ground balls at Ohio State.

He has now played in 43 career games and has 16 caused turnovers and 41 GB's.

LOOKING FOR THE RECORD
Senior Shayne Adams has 144 career points and is in second place in Titan history, just three away from passing former teammate and now undergraduate assistant coach Alex Maini (2011-14).

He is coming off a season in which he tallied a MAAC-best 42 goals to go along with 49 points – both school records.

He already owns the Detroit record with 123 career markers and is eighth in school history with 21 assists.

ADAMS POSSESS NATION'S LONGEST SCORING POINT STREAK
Senior Shayne Adams ran his streak to 48-straight games recording at least one point as he found the back of the net twice and recorded an assist at Michigan.

It is currently the longest streak in the nation by four games over North Carolina's Jimmy Bitter.

He has 140 points on 120 goals and 21 assists during this spurt.

In his career, Adams has scored a point in 49 of 50 games - only in his second career game at Ohio State did he not register a point - as well as scoring a goal in 47 contests.

GIVE IT UP
Junior Paul Bitetti was selected preseason All-Conference by the MAAC and Inside Lacrosse and he has showed exactly why he has received those accolades tallying two caused turnovers against Ohio State and at Michigan.

Bitetti saw a lot of action as a freshman on the 2013 MAAC Championship team and he stepped up his play last year, taking over the top long pole defensive spot and earning First Team All-MAAC.

He recorded a career and team-high 24 caused turnovers and ended the year 12th in Division I and leading the MAAC with 1.85 caused turnovers per game. He also placed fifth on the Titans with a career-best 22 ground balls.

ADAMS FIRST TITAN TO 100 & BEYOND
Senior Shayne Adams - a Tewaaraton Award watch list member in 2013 as well as a three-time All-MAAC selection - has 123 career goals, the only Titan in school history to reach 100 career markers.

He is currently tied for second among active players in the nation in total goals, third in goals per game and 11th in total points.

THE GREAT WALL OF WEBER
Sophomore Jason Weber is back inbetween the pipes for Detroit, giving the Titans one of the top goalies in the nation and he displayed that talent in the season opener.

Against Ohio State, he posted 14 saves and picked up a career-best six ground balls. Last week at Michigan, he stopped 17 shots, tied for the fifth most in his young career.

It was only his 13th career game in net and in all 13, he has recorded double-digit saves.

Weber won a number of awards last season in the MAAC's Rookie and Defensive Player of the Year as he posted 16.27 saves per game and a .642 save percentage, NCAA bests in both stats.

He made 179 total saves – tying a UDM record – and was 16th in the country and first in the MAAC with a 9.07 goals against average.

He ended up registering at least 15 in eight games and a school record 23 in a win over Marist in the regular season, which was the second most stops on the year in Division I.

BIRNEY GOES BOOM
Senior Mike Birney is back to lead one of the most experienced midfields in the MAAC.

In the season opener, he scored a goal and handed out an assist.

Birney – the 2013 Most Outstanding Player at the MAAC Championship – was tabbed Second Team All-MAAC for the second-straight year in 2014 and was a preseason All-Conference selection this year.

He posted 18 goals and 25 points as a junior, tied for second and fifth, respectively, on the squad in 2014.

He now has 52 career goals for fifth in school history, while his 73 points rank seventh. He also has seven career hat trick

Birney - who has a shot clocked as high as 114 MPH in the summer of 2013 - earned the Most Outstanding Player at the 2013 MAAC Championship, where he recorded eight goals and had a pair of game winners and a career-high five in the title game.

BO KNOWS OFFENSE
Senior Brandon Beauregard started all 14 games at midfield last season and finished sixth on the team with a career-best 23 points.

He started off the season strong scoring a goal against Ohio State and that was after recording 12 assists for fourth on the squad and a career-high 11 goals.

Beauregard currently has 51 points on 23 goals and 28 assists in his career with one hat trick, coming at No. 2 Notre Dame in the 2013 NCAA Tournament.

THE BEAT OF HIS DRUM
Senior Scott Drummond tallied a goal - which proved to be the game winner - in the season opener against Ohio State, helping the Titans to their first-ever win over the Buckeyes.

He came back last week to post a man-up goal at Michigan.

The midfielder is coming off his best season culminating in being named Second Team All-MAAC in 2014 as he set career highs with 17 goals, 15 assists and 32 points, good for third on the squad in assists, fourth in points and tied for fourth in goals.

He is currently fifth in school history with 80 points and seventh with 44 goals. He also has totaled three hat tricks in his career.

HICKS AT THE FACEOFF
Junior Damien Hicks rebounded from an 0-of-5 start at Michigan to win nine of the last 16 faceoffs with five ground balls.

Hicks is currently the school's all-time leader in faceoff winning percentage at 44.7% (200-of-419), while his 200 faceoff wins trail only Brandon Davenport's (2010-13) 334.

ANSTEAD EARNS MAAC ROOKIE OF THE WEEK
Another multi-point game is in the books for Mark Anstead as the freshman was named the MAAC's Rookie of the Week on Monday.

It is the second-straight week that a Titan rookie has earned the accolade as Sean Birney took home the award last week.

Anstead tied for the team lead with three points on a goal and team-best two assists. He got the offense going by tallying assists on Detroit's first two goals before scoring his marker in the second period.

He is now tied for the team lead with five points and has a team-high three helpers through his first two collegiate games.

DEFENSIVE PRESENCE
The Titan defense should be one of the strongest in the MAAC as three starters and a key reserve are all back in seniors Joe Gifford and Chris Shevins and juniors Paul Bitetti and Jordan Yono.

The foursome have combined to play in 137 career games with 57 starts, posting 115 ground balls and 68 caused turnovers.

In the season opener, that foursome recorded six caused turnovers and six ground balls as the Titans posted 12 caused turnovers and forced OSU into 18 total miscues.
