ANN ARBOR, MICH. –
Despite a gutsy defensive effort, the University of Detroit Mercy women's soccer team dropped a 3-0 decision to in-state foe Michigan Sunday night in front of a big crowd at U-M Soccer Stadium.

With the loss, Detroit falls to 1-2 on the season, while Michigan improves to 3-1.

The Titan defensive back line, led by Alyssa Lotito, Carly Fiorido, Kaitlan Vossen and Tatum Zurawski, withstood constant pressure from the Michigan forwards. Detroit bottled up the high-powered Wolverine attack in the early going, blocking the first five shot attempts the hosts fired on the Detroit net.

Jennifer Borawski gave the Titans their first chance at goal with a blast from 25 yards in the 20th minute, but a sprawled out U-M keeper was able to prevent the score.

Following the save, the Wolverines utilized a fast-paced counterattack to create an opportunity of their own. A shot from Reilly Martin caromed off a Titan defender and found the foot of Taylor Timko, who sent the follow-up into the net for a 1-0 Michigan lead in the 21st minute.

The hosts capitalized again less than a minute later as Lulu Haidar ripped a free kick just inside the post to give U-M a 2-0 lead in the 22nd minute.

Michigan outshot Detroit 20-1 in the opening frame and added seven corner kicks. Sophomore goalkeeper Marina Manzo got the start and was under constant duress, making five saves and allowing a pair of goals in the half.

Freshman Claudia Eustaquio replaced Manzo in net in the second half and greeted U-M with several highlight reel saves to keep Detroit close.

The Titans regrouped and controlled possession for much of the second half before the Wolverines redirected a low cross into the back of the net to go up by three in the 80th minute.

Eustaquio finished the match with five saves, all in the second half, while allowing the lone score.

Michigan finished with advantages in total shots (33-1), shots on goal (13-1) and corner kicks (12-0). With the win, U-M extends its series win-streak to four games.

Detroit returns to action Wednesday in non-conference action against Bowling Green University. The match is set to begin at 3 p.m. from Titan Field.
