DETROIT (11/7/2016) -- Spearheaded by junior forward
Chea Taylor and her sorority Alpha Kappa Alpha, the University of Detroit Mercy women's basketball squad is hosting a canned food drive prior and leading up to the Titans' home opener on Monday, Nov. 21, against Kent State University.
All fans who bring in a can of food will be granted free admission into Detroit Mercy's opener at Calihan Hall. Game time is set for 7 p.m. on Dick Vitale Court.
Fans may also bring canned foods to Calihan Hall anytime before the game and retrieve a ticket for the game. Fans are being asked to bring their canned food to the front office inside Calihan Hall.
In turn, the food and money collected will be donated to Gleaners Community Food Bank, which is headquartered in Detroit and provides food to more than 500 soup kitchens, food pantries, shelters and other agencies in Southeastern Michigan.
Taylor and the Titan women's basketball team have been involved heavily in the community with the squad raising money and collecting water last season to assist with the Flint Water Crisis, among other community service projects.
Detroit Mercy opens the 2016 regular season Friday at Delaware State with tip-off set for 6 p.m. in Dover, Delaware.Â
